'The Royal Ballet Series 2014 Cinema Season' Returns With Three Classic Ballets, 1/27

Fathom Events, Arts Alliance Media and Mr Wolf extend the splendor of Great Britain's world-renowned Royal Ballet to select U.S. movie theaters with the continuation of "The Royal Ballet 2014 Cinema Season." With a new production of special one-night performances brought to the big screen monthly through March, this series of popular storybook and classic ballets will begin with the romantic "Giselle" on Monday, Jan. 27; followed by the legendary "Swan Lake" on Thursday, Feb. 20; and the classic tale "The Sleeping Beauty" on Thursday, March 20. The renowned Royal Ballet, based at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden, is led by Director Kevin O'Hare and features a wide-ranging repertory showcasing the great classical ballets as well as the new works choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton, Sir Kenneth MacMillan and the foremost choreographers of today. Previous ballets in the series included 2013's "Don Quixote," "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "The Nutcracker" concluding the 2013 series on Dec. 17, 2013.

"Giselle" - Monday, Jan. 27 at 7:00 p.m. local time

The greatest of all romantic ballets, Peter Wright's production of Marius Petipa's classic is a tale of betrayal, supernatural spirits and love that transcends death. "Giselle" reunites Principal Guest Artist Carlos Acosta as Count Albrecht with Principal Dancer Natalia Osipova in the title role on the iconic Covent Garden stage. On the big screen together for the first time, the pair will dazzle audiences as Acosta is considered one of the most influential male dancers of his time and Osipova is an award-winning ballerina who was a Principal with the Mikhailovsky Ballet and ABT before joining The Royal Ballet in 2003. Boris Gruzin conducts the Royal Opera House Orchestra. "Giselle" transformed the dance world when it was first performed in Paris in 1841 and remains at the center of the classical repertory. The Royal Ballet's production uses Marius Petipa's classic version (after the original choreography by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli), first staged in St. Petersburg in 1884.

"Swan Lake" - Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7:00 p.m. local time

"Swan Lake" was Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's first score for ballet. The twinned role of the pure White Swan and the scheming, duplicitous Black Swan tests the full range of a ballerina's powers. Other highlights include American Nehemiah Kish dancing the role of Prince Siegfried as well as the charming Dance of the Little Swans performed by a moonlit lake and sweeping ballroom waltzes in the splendor of the royal palace. Anthony Dowell's romantic interpretation returns the ballet to its 1895 origins by using the choreography of Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa. Dramatic costumes emphasize the contrast between human and spirit worlds, while glowing lanterns, shimmering fabrics and designs inspired by the work of Carl Fabergé create a magical setting.

"The Sleeping Beauty" - Thursday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. local time

Perrault's beloved fairytale, "The Sleeping Beauty," is imbued with wonder and excitement in this sumptuous ballet. Exquisite costumes by Franca Squarciapino and spectacular sets by the celebrated Italian art director Ezio Frigerio provide a brilliant visual feast. The tale of an ill-fated princess played by American Sarah Lamb, an enchanted sleep and the magical power of a prince's kiss is brought to life through Tchaikovsky's incomparable score.
