CORE Performance Company has announced the premiere of SHIFT, a performance of three new contemporary dance works on Saturday, September 15 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 16 at 3 p.m. The events are presented as a gift to the community by area businesses and individuals (listed below) and are free and open to the public, though reservations are recommended. VIP tickets for Saturday evening’s performance are available for $20 and include a private reception with the Company following the performance. McDonough Street, Decatur, GA, 30030. Sue Schroeder, CORE artistic director, and guest artists Lori Teague, Chair of Emory University’s Dance program, and Leslie Scates, member of Lower Left Dance Collective and adjunct faculty at University of Houston, created the dances, along with CORE Performance Company dancers.

CORE Performance Company is excited to open its 32nd season with the world premiere of three original contemporary dance works in their program titled SHIFT, A Place of Possibility. Featuring new work by guest choreographers Lori Teague and Leslie Scates, and CORE’s Artistic Director, Sue Schroeder, SHIFT highlights pure CORE—riveting and passionate work made for and with the dance artists of CORE Performance Company. SHIFT speaks to movement, sometimes abrupt, other times only slight, the act of moving from one place to another for the performer—as well as for the audience. Having begun in CORE Studios in downtown Decatur during the Company’s Summer Intensive, the next evolution of these new works will be revealed on stage at the Decatur High School Performing Arts Center.

ABOUT THE DANCES Working intimately with the artists of CORE Performance Company, Lori Teague’s, “I felt my life with both hands” (inspired by an Emily Dickinson line) explores the unknown as a possibility or opportunity, as opposed to a space that creates fear. “It invites me to trust and interact with new sensations,” says Teague. “My interest lies with the momentum of movement--interrupting that momentum and following it. My desire is to create a work with overlapping surprises, shifts in textural environments, and unusual perspectives. I believe when we are in a state of free flow, with little or no agenda, we experience a random sequence of events in our lives. In this state of openness, we have an opportunity to uniquely connect to animate and inanimate things, sometimes feeling lucky and sometimes feeling confused by the unfamiliar.  And if we are blindsided by events that propel us off, or out of an intentional path, we are forced to notice our follow through, from chaos back into order.”

“HERD”, by Leslie Scates with a cast of four women, explores the qualities inherent in a herd. A herd offers protection against isolation and protects us when we are vulnerable. A herd is a place where we exist as a virtuosic individual and a known member of a close-knit group. Within a herd we are required to maintain multiple states of attention. Active participation within a herd manifests a web of intimacy through sharing conscious actions and connections. All this and more is performed to the arresting, original sound score by Andy Russ.

“STILL”, Sue Schroeder’s contribution to the evening of dance, is inspired by the poem, La Escuela by Garcia Lorca. Addressing the signs left on each of us by destiny, Schroeder’s signature style of movement investigation reveals the intimate alongside the archetypal. A picture paints a thousand words. This quintet teams Schroeder once again with Berlin composer, Christian Meyer.

TICKETS are free to SHIFT, thanks to CORE’s generous sponsors, however, reservations are recommended; visit www.COREdance.org.
