New York City Ballet Promotes Zachary Catazaro to Soloist

New York City Ballet announced today that Zachary Catazaro has been promoted to Soloist. Peter Martins, NYCB's Ballet Master in Chief, made the promotion following the Company's rehearsals on Thursday, February 13.

During NYCB's 2014 winter season, Catazaro has made debuts in leading roles in George Balanchine's Kammermusik No. 2 and Diamonds, from the full-length Jewels, as well as in Jerome Robbins' Dances at a Gathering.

Catazaro was born in Canton, Ohio, and began his dance training with the School of Canton Ballet. He studied at the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, during the summers of 2003 and 2006 and enrolled as a full-time student later that same year. In October 2007 he became an apprentice with New York City Ballet, and joined the Company's corps de ballet in the fall of 2008.

Since joining NYCB, Mr. Catazaro has performed featured roles in George Balanchine's Episodes, Firebird, Ivesiana, A Midsummer Night's Dream (Demetrius), George Balanchine's The Nutcracker (Cavalier and Hot Chocolate), Tschaikovsky Suite No. 3 (E?le?gie), Western Symphony (Fourth Movement); and Symphony in C (First Movement); Jerome Robbins' N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz, and West Side Story Suite (Tony); Peter Martins' Romeo + Juliet (Romeo) and Swan Lake (Spanish); and Christopher Wheeldon's Polyphonia and Soire?e Musicale. He also originated a corps role in Alexei Ratmansky's Namouna, A Grand Divertissement.

Before joining New York City Ballet, Catazaro won First Place in the Youth America Grand Prix Junior Division in both 2002 and 2003.
