New York Live Arts presents the New York premiere of Maud Le Pladec's DEMOCRACY May 8 and 9 at 7:30pm in the New York Live Arts Theater. An important voice within the up and coming generation of French choreographers, Pladec presents her new work, an evening of high energy performance, replete with dance and live music.

In DEMOCRACY, Pladec asks: "How does an individual decision open the possibility for collective action? What do we strive for, or against? Who do we give our consent to? Must we disobey democracy? How do we build a controversialist community?" DEMOCRACY is the second installment in a three-part series titled To Bang on a Can. The work explores the relationship between sound and gesture using atonality and breaks in form, and will be performed to the live music of Julia Wolfe, one of the founders of the music group "Bang on a Can" and Italian composer, Francesco Filidei.

DEMOCRACY is presented as part of DANSE : A French-American Festival of Performance and Ideas, New York City, May 1-18, 2014, organized by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States with additional support from the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, Institut français, Ville de Rennes/Rennes Métropole, SPEDIDAM, and FUSED, a program of New England Foundation for the Arts' National Dance Project, FACE, and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.

Performances will take place in New York Live Arts' Theater. Come Early Conversations and Stay Late Discussions will also be featured with two shows (see complete schedule below). Tickets are $20 and may be purchased online at newyorklivearts.org/season, by phone at 212-924-0077 and in person at the box office.
