Hye-Jin Kim to Perform with the Greenwich Village Orchestra, 3/30

The dynamic violinist Hye-Jin Kim will perform Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto with the Greenwich Village Orchestra under the baton of Music Director Barbara Yahr on Sunday afternoon, March 30th at 3:00 p.m. at the Washington Irving Auditorium, 40 Irving Place, New York, NY.

Winner of the 2009 CAG International Competition and First Prize at the Yehudi Menuhin Competition, violinist Hye-Jin Kim has a rare sensitivity and intellect that set her apart in today's music scene. 2013-14 recital highlights include performances for the Arizona Chamber Music Society and with Brazilian guitarist Joa?o Luiz (of the Brasil Guitar Duo) in a special program at Baruch College presented by the New York Classical Guitar Society, as well as a CD release concert for her debut recording, From the Homeland at SubCulture in New York City. Numerous concerto performances this season include a return engagement with the East Carolina University Orchestra, as well as debut performances with the Dupage Symphony (IL), Victoria Symphony (TX) and Mansfield Symphony (OH).

Ms. Kim has performed as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Christoph Eschenbach and the New Jersey Symphony led by Gerard Schwarz as well as with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Pan Asia Symphony (Hong Kong), the Greenwich Village Orchestra and the Hannover Chamber Orchestra, where she led the ensemble in Mozart's A Major Concerto at age 12. She has appeared in major venues across North America, Europe and Asia, including the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater, Kimmel Center Verizon Hall, the Kravis Center, Salzburg's Mirabel Schloss and both St. John's Smith Square and Wigmore Hall in London. At the invitation of Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, she was honored to perform at the U.N. Headquarters in both Geneva and New York. Ms. Kim has also served as a cultural representative for Korea in Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan through concert and outreach engagements.

In addition to her prizes in the CAG and Menuhin Competitions, Ms. Kim is also a winner of the Philadelphia Orchestra Concerto Competition, the Virtuosos of the 21st Century in Moscow and the Kay H. Logan Chamber Music Award. A rising force in the chamber music world, Ms. Kim has toured throughout the US as a member of Musicians from Marlboro, and festival appearances include Marlboro, Ravinia, Music from Angel Fire, Music at Menlo, Madison (GA) Chamber Music Festival, Chamber Music at Gretna, Kansas City's Sunflower Festival and Prussia Cove's Open Chamber Music. She has collaborated with renowned artists such as Paul Biss, Miriam Fried, Gilbert Kalish, Kim Kashkashian, Ida Kavafian, Jaime Laredo, Menahem Pressler, Mitsuko Uchida and members of the Guarneri, Juilliard, Miami and Orion String Quartets. Ms. Kim has served as concertmaster of both The Curtis Symphony Orchestra and New England Conservatory Philharmonia.

Born in Seoul, Korea in 1985, Hye-Jin Kim began her violin studies with Dong-Hyun Kim at the age of 8. When she was 14, Ms. Kim entered The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, studying with Jaime Laredo and Ida Kavafian. She earned her Masters degree studying with Miriam Fried at New England Conservatory as a recipient of NEC's prestigious Emma V. Lambrose Presidential Scholarship. She is an Assistant Professor of Violin on the faculty of East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Ms. Kim plays a Gioffredo Cappa violin, crafted in Saluzzo, Italy in 1687.

Beyond her musical activities, Ms. Kim is an avid reader of classic literature, with particular interest in the writings of
19th century British authors. During her travels, she has toured the homes and haunts of the Bronte sisters, Jane Austen, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and C.S. Lewis. Her other passion is baseball, and her years at Curtis made her a hardcore fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Founded in 1951 with a mission to discover, nurture & promote young musicians, Concert Artists Guild has helped several hundred young musicians start careers over the past sixty years. And the range of artistry has been great: from the heart of the tradition to the cutting edge. Notable alumni artists include violinist Jennifer Koh, clarinetists David Krakauer and David Shifrin, flutists Carol Wincenc and Marina Piccinini, Imani Winds, the Grammy-winning ensembles eighth blackbird, Pacifica and Parker String Quartets and MacArthur Fellow Claire Chase.

CAG provides support to a roster of talented artists during the critical and formative time between completion of formal studies and the achievement of an established career. Artists are selected through a rigorous multi-round annual competition open to traditional and non-traditional instrumentalists, ensembles and singers. CAG offers comprehensive management services including concert bookings and tour management, commissioning and recording opportunities and marketing and publicity support. Competition winners are also presented on the Concerts in New York at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. The New Music/New Places initiative presents CAG artists in non-traditional venues such as bars, clubs and galleries, introducing diverse audiences to concert music. The CAG Records label enables roster musicians to get their music onto disc and into the marketplace. The CAG Commissioning Program ensures that classical music continues to be a living art form by fostering collaborations between performers and composers.
