During November and December the Brooklyn Museum presents a variety of public programs for adults and kids, including special Veterans Day Weekend programming, a Thursday evening listening event presented by StoryCorps' Military Voices Initiative, musical performances by the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra and the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, and the seventh annual Brooklyn Children's Book Fair with readings by Brooklyn-based authors Adam Gidwitz and Oliver Jeffers.The full line up is as follows:

November 7

6 p.m. Visita guiada: El mundo de la moda de Jean Paul Gaultier: De la vereda a la pasarela

7 p.m. Community Listening Event: StoryCorps' Military Voices Initiative provides an opportunity to hear from service members, veterans, and conflict photographers from a wide variety of backgrounds and beliefs as they recount their experiences in war. Q&A and reception to follow.

November 21

6:30 p.m. Sensory Tour: "Behind the Scenes in Behind Closed Doors"

7 p.m. In Conversation: Join artist Wangechi Mutu and dancer-choreographer Nora Chipaumire as they meet at the intersection of visual art and performance. Moderated by Performa's Adrienne Edwards and presented in conjunction with Performa 13.

7:30 p.m. Drop-In Drawing: Explore artists' processes, develop a range of drawing techniques, and meet others who share your interest. All ages welcome; no experience necessary. Materials fee: $8. R.S.V.P. to gallery-studio@brooklynmuseum.org

December 5

7 p.m. Herstory Talk: Kathlene McDonald, chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at CUNY City College, places Lorraine Hansberry's writing within the context of feminist history and other progressive causes.

7:30 p.m. Talk: In a dynamic PechaKucha presentation, Brooklyn-based bloggers and photographers show us why Brooklyn style is so distinctive. Followed by live music, gallery talks, and other activities. Cash bar and small bites available.

December 12

7 p.m. Visita Guiada del Curador: El curador Richard Aste realizará una visita guiada en Español por la exposición Puertas adentro: Arte en la casa de la América española, 1492-1898.

December 19

7 p.m. Curator Tour: Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish American Home, 1492-1898

VETERANS DAY WEEKEND

November 8

2 p.m. Perspectives Talk: Award-winning photographer Ashley Gilbertson presents his work about domestic memorials to fallen soldiers and discusses the responsibility of governments and society to deal with the consequences of war.

3 p.m. Film: Veterans of Color (Mark Parry, 2012, 60 minutes). Through moving interviews, this powerful documentary reveals the reality African American veterans faced when returning home from World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. A talkback with producer and veteran Dr. Bernard C. Watson follows.

November 9

2 p.m. Curator Talk: Anne Wilkes Tucker, Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston,talks about the inspiration for and process of creating the exhibition WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY: Images of Armed Conflict and Its Aftermath.

3 p.m. Book Signing: Photographers represented in the exhibition WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY sign copies of the catalogue.

MUSIC

Music: Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra

Sunday, December 15, 2 p.m.

The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra presents an afternoon of music by Barber, Respighi, and Khachaturian and a world premiere by Ian Ng. Tours making connections between the music and art on view precede and follow the concert. Tickets available at www.brooklynsymphonyorchestra.org.

Creative Writing Workshop: Sonia Sanchez Peace Haikus

Saturday, December 14, 2 p.m.

In conjunction with the exhibition WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY: Images of Armed conflict and Its Aftermath, this series gives visitors the opportunity to discuss armed conflict-and its aftermath-from a variety of perspectives.

Roundtable Discussion: Behind Closed Doors

Saturday, November 16, 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

In celebration of the exhibition Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish American

Home, 1492-1898, this bilingual, two-part program explores collecting practices and fashion in the colonial Americas. The morning session, conducted in Spanish with simultaneous English interpretation, addresses collecting for the home. The afternoon session, in English, focuses on colonial fashion and identity-making through visual and material culture in Spain's wealthy overseas territories, making a connection with the exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. Herstory Talk and Film: "Letters from Baghdad: The Extraordinary Story of Gertrude Bell"

Sunday, November 17, 2 p.m.

Filmmakers Zeva Oelbaum and Sabine Krayenbühl screen their documentary, a work in progress, about the life of British administrator, archaeologist, cartographer, and writer Gertrude Bell, who traveled throughout the Middle East and was crucial to the establishment of the modern state of Iraq.

Brooklyn Children's Book Fair

Saturday, November 23, 12-4 p.m.

The Brooklyn Museum hosts the seventh annual Brooklyn Children's Book Fair, featuring more than thirty Brooklyn authors and illustrators. Includes storybooks, picture books, graphic novels, and, for the first time, books for young adults. Highlights include readings by Brooklyn-based authors Adam Gidwitz, Oliver Jeffers, and Melissa Guion. Fair admission is free.

Family Performance: Peter and the Wolf

Saturday, November 23, 4 p.m.

Sunday, November 24, 3 p.m.

Sergei Prokofiev's classic interpretation of this folk tale, and other classical music shorts, are presented with style by the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra, with narration and comedic play by The Maestrosities. For information about ticket purchase, visit www.bqcm.org/concerts.htm.

Arty Facts

Sundays, 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

In this hands-on art program for children ages four to seven, you and your family will explore the galleries through activities and conversation, then head to the studio to create artwork of your own. In November, take a peek "Behind Closed Doors" in the exhibition of the same name to find out what makes a house a home. In December, create costumes, masks, and fancy accoutrements as we explore wearable art. Each class is 90 minutes long. Please do not bring siblings older than seven or younger than four. Meet in the Rubin Lobby. Arty Facts will not be held December 22 or 29. Materials fee: $10/family (up to four participants), $5 for Gallery/Studio families and Members at the Family level, and free to Members at the Friend level and above. (Materials fee does not include Museum admission.)

A program for our youngest visitors and those who care for them, Meet the Museum provides toddlers ages two and three with opportunities to explore art and culture through song, gallery activities, and art-making. Adult companions work closely with their children and discover creative and fun ways to interact.
