I feel like he doesn't want to admit he's wrong about Groundhog Day, claiming a few months ago that it would sweep the Tonys. Interesting that he says Come From Away is the front runner for Best Musical. I definitely think it has picked up steam and it's now a three way race between that Comet and Dear Evan Hansen, but would still say the sold out Hansen still has the edge.
"Finally, “Come From Away” is rapidly emerging as the front-runner for Best Musical. I’ve heard this from four of Broadway’s most powerful producers, all good at picking winners.
Love reading that, albeit from the trashy, sensationalist Riedel

Don't forget that Riedel famously predicted Bullets Over Broadway would be a massive, blockbuster hit...
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
Oh, how I cannot wait for the echo-chambered Dear Evan Hansen fanatics to get a dose of reality this award season. Other great new musicals exist this year. And they will be awarded. I will be rooting for Come From Away or Great Comet even harder as we push to June 12.

Producers of “War Paint” are watching their advance rise to just under $10 million. The draws are Patti LuPone, as Helena Rubinstein, and Christine Ebersole, as Elizabeth Arden, who should keep things percolating along nicely in their fabulous hats.

1. Push for whatever you want, but don't put stock in Riedel. If he has proven anything it is that he has a tin ear.
2. Riedel's 4 powerful Broadway producers is actually the only one who talks to him, in an echo chamber. He is nothing if not transparent. (And not in the Jeffrey Tambor kind of way.)
This article kind of made me gag. Although I agree that DEH is overrated and it's slipping up, the rest of what he says is untrustworthy. I don't know a single person who actually treats his opinions as important.

Right, forgot the 10.

Is a 10 million dollar advance for a musical anything to brag about? At exhorbitant prices and selling tickets spread out over 6 months in advance....that doesn't really amount to a lot. Great that Shaiman and Wittman are working at a feverish pitch with the score, but from what I have read and heard, are the set designers, lighting designers, costume designers and book writers working feverishly on those departments? And just because he likes Minchin's music for Matilda does not translate to a good score for Groundhog....even Sondheim has written meh music.
A $10 million advance is actually really strong for the average show. I'm surprised and impressed by it. And its numbers week to week have looked really good. I didn't expect it to be a success, but I've been wrong (a lot) before.
But I really can't see Come from Away being considered the frontrunner for Best Musical. It got nice reviews and is doing quite well without stars or a familiar story, but all these months later, it still feels like the shows with the most heat are Dear Evan Hansen and The Great Comet. I still feel like it's DEH's to lose, but as I said in the previous paragraph, I've been wrong many times before!

I guess it does hurt when a show has a frantic following unless it's Hamilton. DEH is great, and I've seen it 12 times on and off Bway. The fanboys, however, are annoying and not really helping the show build a positive image.
I don't know why people in this thread are acting like DEH selling well means it's definitely getting the Tony. That's not how this works.
And yeah hype is definitely hurting it because (unless you're Hamilton), the show just can't live upto it for most. With the show opening in Winter - by Spring - people are sick of hearing about it and welcome a small show like Come From Away.
Any of the three could win but this is no longer a sure thing for DEH and I think the fans need to accept that there's competition here.

I thought Kinky Boots was a fun show with a great message, but I think Matilda was a great show with fantastic music, lyrics, sets, and cast, and was far more memorable. I agree that it should've won the Tony.
