Based on a discussion I was having with some other theatre fans- do you listen to cast recordings before you see a show?
I have a friend who is a pretty big Idina fan but won't listen to If/Then as she hasn't seen it.
In general I get way more into the music from a show if I've seen it live but if I'm interested in the concept or cast then I'll definitely give it a go regardless of whether I'm able to see the stage show.
Since I don't live in NYC or London, i almost always will have listened to the cast recording before seeing the show - because I have no idea when I will get to see the show! It's not a preference - it's a practicality.
Ideally I would always prefer to hear a new score for the first time while actually seeing the show. Nothing quite beats the magic of hearing songs for the very first time in the context of the show - and also it's more enjoyable for me not to know too much about a show's plot etc before seeing it (plot details will always be revealed in the songs ). But, as ggersten rightly said, it's not always practical to do that. So if I know I will not be able to see a show for quite a while, I will get hold of the cast recording and listen to it.
