We have the movie version. We have the Director's Cut of the movie version. And there was the INCREDIBLE concert version at Encores over the summer with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ellen Greene. Now I think it is time for a Broadway revival of this amazing musical! Here is my dreamcast:

Danny Burstein as Mr. Mushick

Neil Patrick Harris as Orin

Amber Riley, Ciara Renee & Rema Webb as The Trio

James Monroe Iglehart as Audrey II

Now here are 6 different Seymours and 6 different Audreys:

Darren Criss, Skylar Astin, Jeremy Jordan, Christian Borle, Jonathan Groff, Jason Seagel

Sutton Foster, Kristin Chenoweth, Tammy Blanchard, Laura Bell Bundy, Megan Hilty and Helene Yorke

Patrick Page as Mr Mushick

Jose Llana  as Orin

Nikki M James, Saycon Sengbloh and Jennifer Hudson (LOL) as the The Trio

Patina Miller / LaChanze as the voice of Audrey II  (because why the hell not, lol)

Cary Tedder / Matthew James Thomas / Conrad Ricamora / Matt Doyle / Andrew Keenan Bolger as Seymour

Celia Keenan Bolger / Diana Degarmo / Ashley Park / Christina Bianco as Audrey

The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. Are you saying the voice of Audrey should be a black girl but a white actress will play the character? Will it be like a Deaf West revival where there are two actors for one character? Although probably Jennifer Hudson would be preferable as Audrey's voice, she would rock Suddenly Seymour.

Another girl voicing Audrey could be interesting, but only if they could not find and actress who can sing the part. And that is very unlikely in theatre.

Doesn't Jeremy Jordan seem too "hunky" / typical leading man to play Seymour? A nerdy, slightly twinky looking guy seems more suited for Seymour.

My dream cast is very similar similar to Disneybroadwayfan22's...except for Audrey...I would ALSO put Patina Miller + Ciara Renee.

And I love the idea of a female Audrey II!

You're right. It only works if a total twink plays the role.  Oh, wait...

I've always thought that with a female plant, they could play up a lot of different subtext with the whole "plant seduces Seymour" angle. wink

It's Gyllenhaal. Y'know, the total twink who blew everybody away, playing the role.

And having a woman voice Audrey II is one of the worst ideas that's ever been presented here. Just saying.

do explain further, Jordan, why do you think it's the worst idea to cast a female as the voice of the Audrey plant..? The plant can be played as a femme fatale sort of character. It actually adds to the character rather than detract from it, if done well.

and yes, getting a hunky ripped dude to play Seymour deemphasizes his insecurities and geekiness IMO. it's a thread about DREAMCASTING, so stop being so damn anal.

I saw a regional production this past Saturday night and they had a girl playing Mushnik. They called and referred to her as Mrs. Mushnik. While I didn't think it would work, it did.  Even though not your traditional male Mushnik, it goes to show the role could be perfectly played by a female.

She's actually a decent character actress. If you're judging her from her work on Hotel that's not really fair. The writing is abysmal.

Why does that require acting skills? And why is she in a paper bag to begin with? No no, nothing about this adds up at all!

I'd also like to see Austin McKenzie as Seymour

I've seen productions of Little Shop with a female Audrey II, and it just doesn't work very well at all. The dynamic doesn't work- it's not written as a sexually-charged seduction, and it muddies the story to play it that way.

And Gyllenhaal was a great Seymour- and I had my doubts going in. But he's a fantastic (and very weird, idiosyncratic) actor, which a lot of musical theatre boys are decidedly not. The best Seymours are played by fantastic, versatile character actors. Gyllenhaal, despite being the hottest man, isn't a real leading man-type.

The same principle applies to Audrey- you need someone who is decidedly a character actress.
