An assistant professor in the law department of the US Military Academy at West Point has argued that legal scholars critical of the war on terrorism represent a “treasonous” fifth column that should be attacked as enemy combatants.
In a lengthy academic paper, the professor, William C Bradford, proposes to threaten “Islamic holy sites” as part of a war against undifferentiated Islamic radicalism. That war ought to be prosecuted vigorously, he wrote, “even if it means great destruction, innumerable enemy casualties, and civilian collateral damage”.

Between this and the New Yorker article on Il Donald, we see how Trump is freeing up cultural space for people to say these things, and feel brave and empowered for doing so.
It's been said in a different post, but the dark truth is that this is not America slipping into a downward spiral, this is America catching up with the rest of the world. I'm not sure I see a way out of it- it seems like fascism and imperialism is the default state, not a period of ignorance, and you can only go so long before you return to the old ways.
Can things still be changed? Or have we given up on being good humans and devoted ourselves to being good animals instead?
BUT. I dunno. I feel like this is the boiled frog syndrome, where the New Yorker finds American neo-nazis in suits and ties to extol the virtues of Donald Trump. I think this is not a good thing.
