Emma Thompson hasn't been the sole screenwriter of the film for a long time. Her initial draft was re-written over two years ago by Aline Brosh McKenna (who adapted THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA). When Will Gluck came on board to direct a year later, he re-wrote McKenna's version, so much of what Thompson contributed is likely no longer intact.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
I honestly don't think it looks awful.....when i first heard about it i thought for sure it would suck, but it actually seems halfway decent. The writing in some spots could've been better, but it seems like there's something there.
Well at least we now know why they'd make another Annie. The trailer plays like a comedy you'd take your kids to and not hate. They barely suggest its a musical which is another plus in the marketing. The original Annie was a wonderful retro stage musical for its time and both movie versions were to me insufferable. This looks kinda cool. Bright and shiny I'm not counting it out.
That was a fun trailer. It's cool to hate everything so I'm sure everyone else will hate it and everything about it, but I thought it looked cute and the Facebook joke at the end made me laugh out loud. So, yeah.
I know the songs are the most recognizable part of it but since they went ahead and changed everything else, I would have preferred it if they wrote all new songs for this adaptation. Who knows, they might have come up with something better than the original ones.
I do happen to like what Jay Z's done with the music, from what we've heard anyway. I'll reserve a final judgement until the actual release.
It does seem pretty bland so far - right down to the cinematography. Nothing eye popping. Will Gluck has surprised me before; out of the two f*** buddy comedies that came out that year, Friends With Benefits was definitely more of an inspired take.
Also, the idea of Bobby Cannavale and Cameron Diaz singing Easy Street gets me pretty hot and bothered. Just sayin'.
I don't think he is playing the Rooster character. It looked like he is playing Will Stacks' campaign manager. For all we know there will be no Easy Street.
@matttaylorr021 You are correct in that he's playing a new character but he uploaded a photo on his Instagram months ago of him in the recording studio singing that song.
I liked it. I have a feeling that the only 2 songs to survive will be Hard Knock Life and Tomorrow. But I'm curious to see how they fill out the score.
Either way, let's not forget that Annie is a family musical and it's always been pretty corny/cheesy.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
