On tour she was sick. A lot. Her understudy was not listed as anything other than an understudy. It's a shame, because she was really wonderful. (IMHO)
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
woah i didn't mean that to sound mean or anything. She just called out a lot on tour. The show is a beast for the role of Diana, i don't blame her. I was just trying to say that it wasn't a contract of 6 preformances a week, like some roles but she ended up playing that in most cities.
"I doubt she just called out whenever she wanted. She may have started out at 8 shows, but then they changed it and gave her an alternate."
I don't believe this was the case. At least, the box office staff in North Carolina believed she should have been performing 8 shows. She only performed 5/8 shows that week. (She missed two Sunday shows and a weeknight that week)
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
She missed a lot in St. Louis including the two shows I tried to see. The press here I believe reported that she was only contracted to do 6 shows a week on the tour.
