So apparently the ANASTASIA reading is for a Moscow bow not a Broadway one:
Sorry for the grammar, this was translated via Google:
By the 400th anniversary of the Romanovs in Moscow sing the missing princess
In 2013., When the Romanov dynasty history will mark the 400th anniversary in Moscow put a musical about the missing daughter of Nicholas II - Grand Duchess Anastasia. This was during a round table in the RBC told the CEO of Stage Entertainment, producer of the Russian productions of musicals Cats, "Beauty and the Beast" and Dmitry Bogachev Zorro.
Preparation for work on the musical has just begun. "From who exactly will be the team can not say. It is possible that we will refer to the experience of foreign colleagues, but it definitely will be a Russian film director, otherwise there is a risk of getting at the output of the next America's" Anna Karenina "or" Doctor Zhivago "- D.Bogachev said.
The producer also said that he hoped for "an international perspective," a musical saga of the missing Princess Anastasia. "Hopefully, her story begins at home, and will continue somewhere overseas," - said D.Bogachev.
According to the producer, the company plans and setting the stage for the capital's "Phantom of the Opera." Exact date when the Moscow audience will see the legendary London-based musical, D.Bogachev not named. "I promise it will be in the near future. Not an easy task: to improve this performance is impossible and it is better not to even try," - he stressed.

The company Stage Entertainment will be producing a musical about Anastasia Nikolaevna in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. The musical is currently scheduled to premiere in Moscow in 2013. Source
I live in Moscow and if by some miracle Angela Lansbury will reprise her role in this production, I'll just die. I would gladly travel to New York if it opens there, though.
"According to Bogachev, until we know only that the musical will be based on the idea of ??Guy Boltmana, according to the scenario where the film "Anastasia" with Ingrid Bergman in the title role in 1956, based on a script that based on the history of Anna Anderson. Anna claimed that a surviving daughter of the revolution during the last Russian tsar. Who will write the Russian version and put a musical on the Russian scene is not yet clear."
So basically it's going back to the old live-action film which the animated film was loosely based on and incorporating the 1997 songs and new ones.
I tranlsated my link from English to Russian to English again.
"Stage entertainment is currently involved in the development of new powerful music: Anastassy. on behalf of insubordination is synonymous with puzzle. A mystery whether Satenik last Russian Tsar escaped massacre of ENG known as CIAN the royal family in 1917, remains one of the most interesting mysteries. Every romance, intrigue, a theater and an unexpected revelation, insubordination, history has a strong popularity as a game, movie and animated film (submitted by 20-century Fox)." Source
I think I'm missing something - where in this does it say that the Anastasia reading is directly connected to this production in Moscow and not to a future production in New York?
It doesn't. But it stands to reason that, as Stage Entertainment are confirmed to be producing the workshop, and a Stage Ent spokesman according to Playbill said "The work is currently in development for a future European premiere", I don't think it's a massive logical leap to suggest that it's one and the same (it is, after all, the same score...)
Phyllis Rogers Stone actually found a better link to confirm this than I did. Stage Entertainment actually has an audio sample from the movie, the same poster image I found and a press release.
"Stage Entertainment is currently developing a powerful new musical: ANASTASIA.
The name ANASTASIA is synonymous with enigma. The mystery of whether the youngest daughter of the last Russian czar escaped the massacre of the Rus sian royal family in 1917 remains one of the world’s most fascinating riddles. Brimming with romance, intrigue, drama and startling revelation, Anastasia’s story has had enduring popularity as a play, movie and animated film (presented by 20th Century Fox). Now, live on stage for the first time, featuring a beautiful score by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, ANASTASIA will make her debut in Moscow in 2013."
History:
The original movie Anastasia was made in 1956 by 20th Century Fox and starred Ingrid Bergman, Yul Brynner, and Helen Hayes. The film won 5 awards including an Academy Award and Golden Globe. The animated motion picture Anastasia was released in 1997 as a musical fantasy and was the first feature film to be released by Fox Animation Studios. It won 8 awards and was nominated for 15 others, including two Academy Awards. It is all the same.
It makes sense for Anastasia to premiere in Moscow first but I imagine Stage Entertainment plan to bring it to further countries should it be a success like they did with Sister Act.
I just watched the original live-action film and liked it very much. The dowager role is much bigger and she has some great lines. It sure beats what they did in that animated film. I'm kinda excited about this.
I wonder if they are going to do what Disney and Cameron Mackintosh did with Mary Poppins and create a new story based on both films rather a adaptation of the 1997 film. It would get around the problem of Rasputin and Bartok by using a new villian but keeping the songs of the 1997 film.
I actually think it will be premiering in Stuttgart, Germany. Rebecca is closing in Stuttgart on January 6th 2013, and Mama Mia is stepping in for a limited period.
The original Playbill article says European premiere. With A&F opening Rocky in Hamburg, I would think Stuttgart could serve as another launch pad for Anastasia from Stuttgart.
