It's going around that Michael Grandage has been having work sessions with Karen Olivo to replace Elena Roger. Finally someone that will be able to SANG this role.

I do actually love Elena's performance, but it'll be nice to have some real Broadway powerhouse vocals in the role.

Sing the role so long as she shows up. Someone should have a talk with Ms. No Sh-Olivo prior to her signing on.

I thought Roger was contracted through March 2013.

I hope they're already courting Enrique Iglesias to replace Ricky Martin otherwise the show won't stay open long enough once he's gone.

I would probably pass out if this happened. But I'm not getting my hopes up. So at this point, it's a completely unsubstantiated rumor.

March 2013?? I have never heard of a contract lasting more than 1 year.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Expect a lot of dress-swishing during the Buenos Aires number.

March 2013 would make the contract one year and is very reasonable.

I'm not trying to get too worked up over this. But Karen was recently filming a Lifetime movie and I'm not sure if it has wrapped yet. And according to Twitter, she was in LA as of yesterday.

Wouldn't she be working with Grandage in NYC?

This would be delightful! They need to move Elena out quickly, people want to see that show SUNG like it should be!

The real question is... WWPD?

What Would Patti Do?

Mandy Gonzales should be the replacement. Too bad it's too late to replace the director who had no clue.

Oh good, she can SCREAM and not dance her way through another iconic role.

She's also about a foot taller than Eva/Elena.

I predict she would last about a week and a half.

She should stay on TV where she looks pretty.
We could all name 10 girls who could sing it better.

It looks like Karen can take a joke. She also didn't deny this rumor...

@Splurge24: Karen Olivo as EVITA amazing opportunity her understudy will get to star on Bway6-7 times a week!! Mean but funny

her response is in bold.

LOL...did Splurge24 actually obnoxiously 'tag' Karen Olivo's twitter somehow, or would have Karen had to search to find that comment? (cf. that recent London incident).

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I love that she actually responded. But really. With all the actors who would kill to have a gig on Broadway why would the people who get jobs be so flakey? I really admire people with the work ethic like Michael Cerveris.

Surprised it's not Bianca Marroquin. She was cast to replace Roger on the West End production, but it closed before she got a chance to.

once upon a time I almost did. I was supposed to replace Elena Roger in Evita june, july and august of 2007. But the show closed about a month before I was supposed to start rehearsals

Wow. Bianca would probably be great. She's got a great voice, but she's not quite a vocalist like Karen or Mandy Gonzalez. But she'd surely be better than Elena's screeching.
