Hi all! My son's first show at NYU (Marat Sade) is opening at the end of this month. He said it is all music and that the director is wonderful. I posted the link above. Since I just came back from NY Unifieds with my daughter, I can't afford to go back up so soon. (He's okay with that- really). Anyway, if any of you can go, I'd love to get a report about the show. It's from 2/29 to 3/9. My son's initials are BP. Thanks for indulging me!
Oh- and here's a link about the director. I met her a couple of weeks ago and she was very complimentary about my son. Her bio is very impressive. Makes me want to see this show even more- curse the economy!
Thanks all for your support! I don't think nudity is involved- at least my son didn't tell me it was. He said there is no spoken word. I've never seen a production of Marat Sade (I know- my bad). Anyway, I look forward to hearing what you all think! Thanks! ~sm
Marat/Sade has traditionally involved a lot of music/performance as part of the play within the play concept. It is also written in verse, so it would not surprise me, especially with a director like Liz Swedos, that it has been set entirely to music.
It's really a great piece for a college to be doing. It is easy to have as small or large an ensemble as your department can support, and even as an ensemble member, creating the backstory and deciding what mental illness or psychosis your character has and living that for two plus hours is a pretty good acting challenge.
^ Like! Thank you again everyone! I do believe he is enjoying this show and the rehearsals have been very time consuming with also being a full time student. He's playing Oedipus in The Seven for his next show. That one is a New Studio Broadway production. I'm just glad he's getting cast! Yup- I'm proud (and supportive) of both of my kids! Thanks again!
My boyfriend's roommate is in it as well! I've heard some of the material and it's definitely going to be worth seeing. They've put a LOT of time and work into it.
Also, added bonus, it's a streamlined version and cuts a lot of the fat from the original script. Swados is apparently a big fan of cutting up her material.
Show opens tonight to industry people and then the public tomorrow night! So exciting! My son dislocated his knee on Monday so now he has to perform in pain and swelling! Couldn't have happened at a more opportune time!
