Looks like a fun show. I am surprised at how minimalistic the set is though.

That's an understatement. If they had panned out, you wouldn't see anything else but an empty stage.. oh, and corn. That's how most of the scenes were.

I have to say I think the set looks alot more full in these pics than it does live. I really like the set designs but I feel if it were more full it would work even better.

Pictures look great...the artwork is horrendous. Is that really the best they can come up with? And why can't they at least render it so it doesn't look so pixilated on the straight edges of the title?

propervillain, if I were you I'd come up with several different designs and bombard the producers with them in whatever way you can...there's still hope before this gets to broadway (and it could be your big break!)

The pictures really do look great. But I agree that basically all the promotional material does not seem to be showing off this show in it's best light.

Brooke looks stunning. I'm really excited to hear how her performance grows as she settles in and how the material changes to fit her a little better.

And ummm, Raul looks HOT with that beard and long hair. I love it.

Anyway, I'm really excited for this show and I really hope they continue to refine it and make it everything it looks like it could be: a smash.

I want the greatest of things for this show. It's not really how I pictured it, but that could work. And Raul looks great, generally speaking, but I don't think the beard and the long hair really fit Jonas.

I really do not understand why the set is so minimalistic. There is so much they could have done for some of the scenes especially the dinner and the revival. They don't need a huge set by any means, but they could at least have something more than a backdrop of corn and some pieces that barely evoke the location.

To me, the most laughable piece of scenery in the show is Marva's doorless front porch. I mean, a door would have gone wonders toward us buying that as her home. As it is, it's a wall with a window and a bench.

The tent set actually works well, but I agree that some of the other scenes could use some flown pieces. . .a window, a sign. . .something.

I think it looks plain and kinda conventional, neither of them looks particularly interesting, hopefully the actual show is more interesting than the design.

Would some describe the tent set? There are no pictures and I'd like to know what it looks like since it sounds like the only interesting set piece in the show.

It's still very minimal but it works. There is a riser set which is rolled out to the center of the stage by actors and then two actors lock it into place. The Angels of Mercy choir sits here and in the center at the bottom Raul Esparza will do his preaching at times.

The townspeople all walk in carrying wooden chairs and they set them down on the right and left sides of the stage and this is where they will sit for the revival meeting.

Sam (Kendra) sits on the right side off stage above the audience which is where she is creating the revival magic via electronics.

Finally there is a cross in the center of the stage which comes down and is used for "the sign" at the end of the 1st act.

Can't remember what they had projected on the back curtain but it could have been the starry nighttime projection they used if I remember correctly.

It's nothing fantastic but for me it worked.

The backdrop for the tent was actually a fiber drop. It made me laugh, because anytime the action moved to the tent, you'd see the cyc get switched with the fiber optic drop. Also, there were some poles/lights/ropework/fencing that flew/tracked in for the tent scenes.

Is this a period piece?
Brooke and Raul look almost modern day and the ensemble looks depression era.

I have been asking around to try and figure out what year it's supposed to be in. The movie was technically "now" but that's when "now" was the early 90's. I don't know that it makes an enormous difference either way, but I'm curious as to what they're intending.

There is only one thing that dates the show, and that puts it in 1992, the year the movie came out. Its Sam's computer (it's a plot point). It's a lovely, clunky little MacPlus. If it were set present day she'd be using a netbook or an iPad.

Other than that, it really doesn't matter when it's set.

Ahh yes, that cute little Mac. That's definitely an indicator of when the story took place. When I first saw it on stage, I was like "Wow, I haven't seen one of those since elementary!"

The computer does date it a bit, but I felt like the costuming of the bus group and especially Kendra's character was very contemporary. I feel like they should change just that one prop and let the story be set today. When the Sheriff takes the computer as evidence, the Warden could say something along the lines of "Umm, I don't know how to work this thing." The sheriff can respond, "Figure it out."

Was there anything else to date the show? I can't think of anything, minus the costuming of the yokels being a bit depression era.
