Ouch to a lot of things this week. But wow, those reviews seemed to really help AFTER MIDNIGHT and the Shakespeare plays. Both posted great numbers for shows of their respective size.
How can Spiderman or Cinderella not post a closing yet. I don't wish either ill, but both have been loosing money for many weeks now and both did very well at the start, you'd think they would want to return as much money as possible to their investors rather than burn through it to cover losses.
Mamma Mia has only made less money the week of 11/11/2007 when the show made $413,926 and it only played 4 performances that week, and the only other time the show has made less than $500,000 was its first week of previews
**Correction: Sorry I thought I had put in the 4 performances when I first posted it.

The decline with Mamma is quite interesting and actually a topic of conversation I had with a broker today. Used to the easiest tickets to get rid of and now it is a big struggle. I had brought up the visibility issue too. I'm sure the numbers will rise over the holidays, but gotta wonder whether the move will keep the show running at full steam.
Mamma Mia may be danger of closing if the numbers don't improve especially in the tougher months of January and February, did the producers even advertise it was moving theatres?
Unlike Chicago being given a 2 nd life moving to the Ambassador, I think this move will spell the death of mama. No need to cry for it as it has had a really healthy run.

It's worth noting that the week of 11/11/2007 was the beginning of the IATSE strike, so the show only played four performances that week.
Why such a significant drop in grosses for Chicago? I know it happens, but am curious.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
I honestly think that Motown's popularity has definitely played a part in Mamma Mia's decline in sales. In all honesty if the sales in January are below $500,000 Id expect a closing notice for June. Also I think that the decline in sales, may be in part why the cast hasn't turned over yet since they have all been their for almost 2 years now outside of the current Sophie, because they couldn't afford the move with the casting costs.
It is hard to feel too bad for Momma Mia after nearly 15 years in Europe and here AND on tour. Very few shows have been so successful. For better or worse, the show created a whole new form of musical. It will probably be around a while longer.
It will be most interesting to see how the reviews change the fortune of Gentleman's Guide. Their gross may double. Anyway the next few weeks should be good for everyone.
I wonder why IL DIVO's grosses were bunched together. They played 3 shows from Nov. 7-9, then from Nov. 11-13(two different weeks).
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
Mamma Mia's been declining for a few years and I imagine the producers thought the show would do the same business at the Broadhurst but clearly they need to start promoting the show and its new location.
Wonder when Betrayal will announce its recoupment, given its grosses I'm sure its nearing recoupment although I imagine Craig, Weisz and Spall are all on hefty salaries. 700 Sundays I imagine will also recoup quite soon.

Does 700 Sundays even need to announce a recoupment? I thought Billy just took the sets out of storage and remounted the original production. Also Billy's wife is one of the two producers for 700 Sundays, and her whose who reads as a joint venture with her husband. The production was in the black as soon as it played its first performance, and because of that I don't think the producers aka Billy Crystal will make an announcement because unlike Hugh Jackman Back on Broadway, most of the $1 million a week the show is pulling in is going directly into Billy's bank account and there really is no money riding on the production.
Nice to see JANIS plugging away as well as the aforementioned AFTER MIDNIGHT and TWELFTH NIGHT/RICHARD III. MENAGERIE as well is also perfectly healthy, and well-poised for great holiday business.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
I have to wonder if Motown is starting to fade slightly. Yes, it's still grossing well over a million a week. But it's not selling out any more and has now occasionally be up at TKTS(Tue & Wed this week[so far] at 50% off).

I don't think it's starting to fade. I just think with no critical raves and no awards, I think MOTOWN has an audience of 98% tourists. So I'm not surprised to see it's not 100% sold out during slower times. I bet during holiday weeks and spring/summer it bounces back up to sold out or close to it. And It's still grossing numbers almost any show would kill to have even in these weeks.
The bigger mystery is what's made MAMA MIA fade so sharply since it's move. Could they really have gotten that much walk by business at the Winter Garden that they now don't get?
