This brilliant show should be doing better. I was at yesterday's matinee, and the mezzanine was only about half full. Go see it.

that's because america is conservative. This is the reason why we do not have more radical musicals on Broadway

The show is difficult to describe. It's a dark comedy, in the extreme. I saw no one walk out at the performance I attended. The response from our audience was very enthusiastic, and it appeared to be an older crowd.

I agree. It's brilliant in every way and arguably the funniest straight play on Broadway today.
I think the only reason it is doing so badly is because it is viewed by the public as a one man play. Marketing should do everything possible to disabuse them of that. That is, if it's not too late already.

I don't think its difficult to describe. It's a new dark American comedy about a church puppet group, and one of the of puppets may or may not be possessed by the devil. It's funny and shocking, but I don't think it's difficult. An Ionesco play is difficult, "Hand to God" is Gothic-Pop Horror at it's best.

And that's why Book of Mormon closed so quickly, losing its entire investment. They should have learned their lesson when Avenue Q bombed and didn't take home a single Tony.

Oh yeah I have seen 10 shows on Broadway this year (in Jan/Feb) and will see five more in May! I loved 9 and left On the Town at intermission (boring!!! Just my opinion of course!) Well I must not be that interested in this show since I have no desire to google it. But thanks for the poster above who described the show! It is much appreciated.

While I agree that the vulgarity certainly didn't hinder The Book of Mormon or Avenue Q from becoming the smash hits they are, I do think Hand to God is more biting than either of those shows, which at heart are both musical comedies. This play is equally as funny, but it has a much more cynical viewpoint, and I can see why that could turn people off.
Still, I loved it, and I'm planning to go next week with my sister.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

My partner and I saw, Hand to God, last night and thought it dark, hysterically funny and brilliant. The orchestra was full - I didn't look up to see what was happening upstairs - and, as far as I could tell, nobody walked out last night. In fact, at times it was hard to hear over the laughter.
Go see this. It is extremely funny and very thoughtful.

Surprisingly, it is on TDF now for 8 dates
I suspect that will change once the Tony nominations come out.

I am surprised to read that. When I went to purchase the tickets, it was immediately after opening and the rave reviews. I had a discount code, which they honored, but had that day upped the price. Without checking the box office totals, I got the impression that sales were improving.
I genuinely hope that this has a healthy run. Its great to see something so dark on Broadway.

I saw this a few weeks ago (along with "On the Twentieth Century", "King and I", and "Something Rotten".) This is the show I want to see again, and that I have thought about a lot. I thought the cast was fantastic, and that the show is propelled by talent, not special effects (well, there is the puppet). Yes, very dark comedy, with PUPPET SEX! (OMG!)
I thought it was fantastic, but I guess if you think it's a cute church comedy, you will be mistaken. Definitely go see it!

Saw the show for the second time last night (saturday evening). I am happy to report the show was sold out to the point where all 10 standing room tickets had already been picked up!! I know Saturday night is supposed to be a shows best selling performance, but it is still amazing. Also considering the Booth is known for having one of the strickest standing room policies I think it says a lot that people were willing to stand around all day to get a chance to get a sro spot.
Also considering Hand to Gods initial marketing tactics were horrible, it says wonders the power of reviews and word of mouth for this production. I honestly want to see this weeks grosses, and wouldn't be suprised to see a block of tickets open up through the end of the year within the next few weeks.
In terms of the Tony race, I see a Kinky Boots vs. Matilda senario brewing. The London import vs the home grown orignal crowd pleaser. If sales continue their current trajectory I wouldn't be suprised if Hand to God pulls an upset over The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. I think this is even more plausible given that unlike Matilda whose reviews were far superior to that of Kinky Boots, Hand to God and Curious Incidents were essentially on par, with Newsday being the only non-rave for Hand to God, compared to Curious Incident's universal raves.

I'm glad to see this show can some love here. I was disappointed when I showed up here a few days ago and anything related to Hand to God was buried.
For those people on the fence, go see this. Its good. Very good.

Um.....WOWZA! Took my 18 year old....what a show! I am seldom at a loss for words, and nothing can truly get you "ready" for this!!
Anyone know if the script is published yet?
