Yay. I've been waiting to see Nathan Lane play Nathan Lane in a new Nathan Lane play.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Haven't people tired of him, yet?

It's actually Douglas Carter Beane's new play, and a more serious one as well. As for audiences being tired of Lane, I don't think so. He kept The Addams Family alive for a year after devastating reviews, starred in a hugely successful revival of Iceman, and has been very well received in an understated performance on The Good Wife. He's also been away from Bway for 2 years, so it's not like we've just seen him. Just go see The Performers instead.

Nathan Lane's a gem-no getting tired of a gem. A one of a kind gem.

Count me in...another drab Nathan Lane portrayal! Can't wait...I enjoyed him more in Love, Valour than Producers or Merlin or Addams Family but I need my Nathan fix.

Nathan has taken a definite serious path in his most recent work. There is nothing funny about THE ICEMAN COMETH or THE GOOD WIFE. From what I understand, this new play is pretty dark and serious as well. He wants to show his range and break the mold the haters have him in before the end of his career. He certainly has the acting chops, work ethic and drive to do drama well.

Nathan said during Addams Family that it was probably his last musical. The recent serious roles show that great side of Nathan that has been overshadowed by the enormity of the musical roles he has played. He is a wonderfully talented actor. I am thrilled about this role and the subject matter. I think he will be perfect.

Here's how his role is described in a casting notice:

"Male. Late 40s – Early 50s. A performer. Off stage he is refined and elegant. Even if his shirts are frayed, there is a sophistication about him. He speaks with a standard American accent so flawless he almost sounds British. A quick temper. Overly proud and vain, a mischievous sense of humor. Self-loathing but still charming. On stage, all bets are off. Wild, effeminate, think Paul Lynde and Charles Nelson Reilly at their swishiest. Must have an ability to hold a stage with personality. Some singing involved."

...sounds like Nathan Lane.

Thank you for sharing that, Kad. From reading that, it does sound like a character Nathan will be able to do very well.

The question is, will he get bored in the role and start breaking character and talking to the audience?

In my experience Joey (as Lane used to be called) was also a really nice guy, if a little shy, and as funny off stage as on.

I don't get the hatred...

^^^ Thank you for the input, GavestonPS That's good to hear.

And I don't get it, either. But... I don't know that it's really "hatred"/"haters", I think it's more a mentality of "one trick pony."

"I've seen him do that before."

The question is, will he get bored in the role and start breaking character and talking to the audience?

I've never seen him break when he was doing a straight play. He's only done it in FORUM, THE PRODUCERS, and THE FROGS (to my experience), and each time he did it there it was expected and encouraged. He definitely didn't do it in BUTLEY or GODOT or ICEMAN COMETH. (Although considering his character is a vaudevillian I wouldn't be surprised if there was vamping written into the script)

Yes, Eponine Amneris. Of course he's a nice guy at stage door experiences, charity events, ETC. What celebrity isn't? It's their job, you know.

Um, guys, I brought up the subject of Lane's character and shared my experience.

Jane has every right to share her experience in return.

I stage managed a show Joey did before he was famous and later worked beside him at the Harris Poll, our "day" jobs. He could be a handful for a stage manager because he got bored easily, but there was no malice in his behavior, he didn't hurt the show and most of the time I was doubled over with laughter. (For example, most nights I had to collect him at half hour from a bar across the street. He wasn't drinking; he was entertaining the patrons with jokes and impersonations!)

No doubt he faces very different pressures these days and perhaps he has changed. Jane's experience is more recent than mine.

***

As for breaking character in FORUM, doesn't everyone? Milton Berle did a half-hour stand-up routine when he played Pseudolus. Probably not what Shevelove intended, but it was actually pretty funny.

THE FROGS seems equally suitable for ad libs and Mel Brooks is rather the king of that sort of thing.

I'm really interested in the fairy/nancy era in stage entertainment, mostly because of the way it was described by George Chauncey in Gay New York. I would be interested in seeing it for the subject matter, Nathan seems perfect for the role. I hope to be able to see it.

I agree. I love Chauncey's book and it's a very interesting period that has been mostly obscured by the decades of enforced silence that followed. Should be ripe for dramatization.

(Sorry, Jane. I thought I was on your side here, even if we've had different experiences.)

I'm surprised by the number of people who "don't get" the hatred for Lane. Perhaps those people are new to the world of theatre.
Nathan Lane has had a hugely successful theatre record. His salary for The Producers reached a new high. He has snatched up some of the best roles in the theatre. Of COURSE some theatre people resent and hate him.

Meanwhile, I have a question regarding The Nance. Is it really a full fledged musical or more of a play with some music?

" In my experience Joey (as Lane used to be called) was also a really nice guy, if a little shy, and as funny off stage as on."

He's an hilarious actor, always (to me) a delight to watch.

But there are tons of stories about his vicious side; admittedly they come from periods when he was drinking.

There's no reason the many facets of his character, beautiful and less so, can't all be acknowledged.

And I'm greatly looking forward to this play and his performance; it sounds tailor-made.

I just always assumed he could go from nice to not nice at the drop of a hat. It's not a cliche to say that the funniest clowns are the most vicious- history has proved it perpetually. Especially funny fat clowns. There's a reason that the idea of "the fat comedian is a dangerous, self-loathing monster at his worst" has permeated our society so deeply, because it's so often true.

Like any star of Lane's stature, there are going to be varying stories. We've heard both bad and great things about LuPone, Betty Buckley, Elaine Paige, Bernadette Peters, Lauren Bacall, Chita Rivera, and other legends of the entertainment industry.
