Single Carrot Theatre is thrilled to announce its eleventh season, a diverse series of adaptations, new works, and collaborative efforts. Season 11 subverts and re-frames familiar figures and figureheads by challenging what we thought we knew. By turns funny and frantic, dark and dirty, each play reveals the other face of a well-known and sometimes beloved character in the bold and risky style for which Single Carrot Theatre is known.

Lear
By Young Jean Lee
September 29 - October 27

Shakespearean drama meets millennial self-indulgence in this outlandish and driving take on King Lear. Boring, stuffy parents have been left for dead - consigning audiences to the not-so-tender mercies of a younger generation, a mix of heroes and villains indulging their own selfish whims. Despite sharp wits and sharper teeth, these Kardashian-esque kids are comically shallow, callous, and vain: more concerned with dancing and drama than their own doomed parents. But superficial pleasures can only reign for so long before their conscience catches up with them, unearthing ugly secrets, doubts, and fears.

A Public Reading of an Unproduced
Screenplay About the Death of Walt Disney
By Lucas Hnath
February 2, 2018 - February 25

Leave the magic behind in this darkly humorous, cutting examination of the megalomaniac who shaped a thousand childhoods: Mr. Walt Disney. The carefree and charming creator of so many beloved characters - father-figure to a generation of Americans - fades away as this fraught and fast-paced play chases down the dark heart of the Disney machine. Power, betrayal, deception, and disillusionment weave together to form a portrait of a man so full of hubris and obsessed with his own legacy, he tried to remake the world and achieve immortality. Join us at the table.

Peter Pan
April 27 - May 20

A beloved tale of magic and mystery gets a new update in this re-imagining of a classic childhood story. Working in collaboration with Baltimore's LGBTQ+ residents and service organizations, SCT will create a new adaptation of the familiar favorite that includes contemporary conversations on gender, sexuality, and performative identity and embraces queer culture. Neverland is transformed from a distant fantasy to a modern safe-haven for those who have been rejected and devalued, a stronghold against normalcy and a place where Peter and his Lost Boys can finally be themselves.

Putin On Ice
Co-produced with The ACME Corporation
Written by Lola Pierson
Directed by Yury Urnov
Fall 2018

Political puppetry and savage spectacle meet in a fantastical new portrait of Vladimir Putin, created in collaboration with The ACME Corporation. This ostentatious piece blends fable, melodrama, and theatre to create something entirely new and thrillingly strange. Putin is elevated from man to myth, stretching through time to become more deity than dictator, which calls forward disparate parts of history for side-by-side examination. Cycles of power, control, and political currency are laid bare in a world where authority is created from thin air and passed like a baton, begging a simple question: has anything really changed?
