Liberty Showcase Theatre announces auditions for Crimes of the Heart By Beth Henley and directed by Moses Goldberg

Moses Goldberg is the recently retired Producing Director of Stage One: The Louisville Children's Theatre. This director, teacher, and playwright has directed professionally at theatres from Washington to Florida , including - in 1988 - one of the first US/Soviet exchanges at Moscow 's famed Taganka Theatre. His book of essays, TYA: Essays on Theatre for Young Audiences, was published in 2006. He has taught at Florida State University and Southwest Texas State University and now serves as an adjunct faculty member at McDaniel College . The script describes characters in their mid to late 20's, but Moses reserves the right to cast older (as is often done and was done in the movie version). The breakout of the 4 women and 2 men follows. All Roles Are Open.

LST also seeks a producer, stage manager, technical director and those interested in lighting and set design positions.

Character Breakouts and Synopsis:

Lenny - the sad oldest sister, a round woman with a round face. She has been the caretaker for her aging Grandfather, and seems to have missed out on a life of her own. (Diane Keaton in the film version.)

Meg - the thoughtless middle sister, who left home to pursue a singing career in Hollywood , but has been reduced to clerking in a pet food factory. She has sad, magic eyes. (Jessica Lange .)

Babe - the confused youngest sister, married to a prominent lawyer who has been abusing her. She has just been released on bail after shooting him in the stomach. She has an angelic face and fierce, volatile eyes. (Sissy Spacek .)

Chick - the holier-than-thou cousin -- brightly dressed with yellow hair and shiny, red lips.

Doc -- an attractively worn man with a slight limp that adds rather than detracts from his quiet seductive quality. He appears slightly older than his chronological age.

Barnette -- a slender, intelligent young man with an almost fanatical intensity that he subdues by sheer will, he is the lawyer hired to represent Babe, on whom he has a longtime crush.

At the core of the tragic comedy are the three Magrath sisters, Meg, Babe, and Lenny, who reunite at Old Granddaddy's home in Hazlehurst , Mississippi after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The trio was raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments and each has endured her share of hardship and misery. Past resentments bubble to the surface as they're forced to deal with assorted relatives and past relationships while coping with the latest incident that has disrupted their lives. Each sister is forced to face the consequences of the "crimes of the heart" she has committed.
