If you were lucky enough to see An Evening with Stephen Schwartz at last year's Adelaide Cabaret Festival, then you were lucky enough to see the wonderful Carrie Rawlings from the UK. Her debut show at the 2011 Adelaide Cabaret Festival is When I Was Young, I Listened to the Radio.

Carrie Rawlings is a sublimely talented pianist/vocalist/songwriter who will take you on a whirlwind, emotional journey into diversity with "When I Was Young, I Listened to the Radio". Inspired by the beguiling, velvety tones of Karen Carpenter, the soul of Whitney Houston and the force that is Carole King, she's also shaped by a family that's half from Guyana and half from an English market town. Carrie will share her life's laughter, joy and - occasionally - despair, and the music that's echoed the trip.

We put Carrie in the Cabaret hot-seat with 10 questions in 10 minutes:

1. What are you looking forward to most about coming back to the Adelaide and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival?
The wealth of brilliant performances that will be on offer all in one place - oh and the freshly fried squid stall outside the Festival Centre (if you have it again this year).

2. What has been your biggest learning curve so far working as a professional performer?
Channelling those nerves to make sure they get utilised and don't become a hindrance.

3. What was it like performing with Stephen Schwartz last year?
Amazing and daunting all at once. He is a genius, but so generous and I loved every minute of it.

4. What can audiences expect from When I Was Young I Listened to the Radio?
A cosy ride through the music and moments that have made me tick and an exploration into how music colours your life.

5. What do you think "Cabaret" is and why is it different to any other performance art?
For me, it's is a cross between concert and theatre. It brings together many disciplines and does something 'else' to you. It's intimate and larger than life all at the same time. It;s great.

6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
No idea but I know I'll be performing!

7. What would be your advice to young people wanting to break into the industry?
Make sure you LOVE it as you won't succeed otherwise. Then work hard and believe in yourself as you are your own product.

8. What has been your greatest achievement so far?
Bringing my own show to Adelaide for sure.

9. Who have been your greatest influences as a performer?
Oh, where to start...Karen Carpenter, Carole King, Whitney Houston, Barbara Streisand, Stevie Wonder...the list is endless.

10. Who are your top 5 picks for the 2011 Adelaide Cabaret Festival.
Daniel Boys, Chita Rivera, Marguarita Pracatan, The Magnets and Amy Housewine. I need to see all of them.
