Adelaide Festival Center Announces 2011 Season

Adelaide Festival Centre's 2011 season showcases some of the finest Australian and international performers on the arts scene today.  In 2011 the Adelaide Festival Centre will present a diverse and exciting program with a range of experiences for visitors, from smaller scale productions in intimate venues to large scale mainstream musicals in the Festival Theatre.
 
Festival fever continues with the Adelaide Festival Centre presenting its eleventh Adelaide Cabaret Festival in June and the fourth OzAsia Festival in September.  An early allocation of tickets to the popular Variety Gala that opens the Adelaide Cabaret Festival can be purchased when buying 4 or more shows in the season subscription (the remaining tickets for the Gala will go on sale when the Cabaret Festival program is launched in April).
 
From its early days, when the public came together and contributed towards creating Australia's first multi-purpose arts centre in the heart of Adelaide, the Adelaide Festival Centre remains committed to ensuring audiences have the opportunity to experience a selection of quality arts throughout the year.
 
With vibrant costumes and raw energy, West Side Story kicks off the 2011 season bringing us into the New Year, followed by American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens who will be performing in Adelaide for the first time. It's mad March at the Festival Centre with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra joining forces with comedy rock superstar Tim Minchin, The Australian Ballet's beautiful Madame Butterfly and the Come Out Festival will fill the venues in late March with fun for the family. April brings some superb shows starting with Nancye Hayes & Reg Livermore in Turns, the much anticipated smash hit Broadway Musical Wicked will play in the Festival Theatre and other shows include Children's Cheering Carpet SALTBUSH and World War Bob.  Katie Noonan and Karin Schaupp perform in May in a rare music collaboration, inSPACE  and Mobile States present Africa and Soweto Gospel Choir are back due to popular demand.  The second half of the year sees inSPACE present dance piece Side To One and the Paco Peña Flamenco Dance Company return. August is a busy month with Australian Dance Theatre teaming up with the Adelaide College of the Arts in Worldhood, Neil Armfield's production of The Book Of Everything and inSPACE's A Mini Festival of New Performances. Under the light of the full moon the OzAsia Festival takes place in September featuring Leigh Warren & Dancers in Dreamscape. The enchanting Gruffalo's Child comes to Adelaide early October and Urban Myth Theatre of Youth present The Girl Who Was A Hundred Girls. No program would be complete without the tinsel twinkling Christmas Proms in December featuring the Adelaide Art Orchestra and guest performer Bernard Walz.
 
Celebrating 34 years of entertainment for 3 - 10 year olds, the surprising and charming Something On Saturday will be back during the winter months.  Also returning will be the innovative children's film festival Little Big Shots, along with a family program for young and old and after 25 years Morning Melodies still offers the best daytime entertainment.  Our distinctive and free Visual Arts program will continue to exhibit in the Artspace Gallery and theatre foyers and the Performing Arts Collection will be digging up past treasures, sourcing new artefacts and displaying them around the Festival Centre.
 
 A new free event In Conversation With, will be hosted by ABC personality Fenella Kernebone (presenter on Arts Nation on ABC).  In Conversation With are free forums with topics about arts and culture. Each session will feature a panel of industry leaders participating in discussion and debate (those attending will be able to sit back with a glass of wine and join in the discussion through an informal Q&A).  
Encouraging and developing new audiences has always been a priority for the Festival Centre and in 2011 the GreenRoom program (16 - 30 year olds) and centrED program (primary and secondary students) will continue to give young people the opportunity to participate in a number of workshops, events and forums. The Student Tix program offers discounted tickets, enabling younger audiences to access the arts and is supported through the generous donations of the Festival Centre's Foundation program.

Subscription season tickets are now on sale from today to 4 or more shows, this is the priority booking period where patrons can secure some of the best seats to select shows throughout the year! (Note: tickets for individual shows will go on sale from Tuesday 16 November).
