White, David, Drumstruck Cast to Appear in 'Nativity'

Tony Award-winner Lillias White, Keith David and the cast of Drumstruck will appear at Joe's Pub in Nativity: A Life Story this holiday season.

"For over 15 years Nativity: A Life Story has provided an escape for NYC audiences from 'Holiday Commercialism' and instead brought 'spiritual fervor, showbiz glamour, African American pride, and a celebration of women' (NY Times) to the thousands of people," state Joe's Pub notes. 

On December 10 and 11, the creators--James Stovall, Hattie Winston, Harold Wheeler--will bring Nativity downtown to Joe's Pub in a special concert version Downtown to Joe's Pub with a stellar cast led by Nativity vets White (Chicago, The Life) and David (Hot Feet, Seven Guitars).  "Share the Christmas story from Mary's perspective - based on the international Shrines of the Black Madonna - in a powerful concert of spoken word narrative, and music that is saturated with African traditional tunes, Gospel, Jazz and R&B."

For Monday the 11th only, Nativity will also feature the cast of Drumstruck, the brainchild of drum enthusiast Warren Lieberman, who started the phenomenon in 1997 by inviting strangers into his Lieberman Drum Cafe in Johannesburg to join him in beating a drum. "Featuring 11 South and West African percussionists, they start the show with a pulse-racing bang: song, dance and eye blurring drum performances. Then they lead the audience in an exhilarating experience of exuberant African drumming." Although their full show will not be performed here, the cast members of Drumstruck will be joining in on Nativity's opening number and will be bringing one selection from their show to this stage.

Performances will be on December 10th at 1 PM and on December 11th at 7 PM and 9:30 PM.
