EARLY MUSIC

Miller Theatre's "essential" (The New Yorker) Early Music series has been lauded as a leader in New York's burgeoning historical performance scene. This season, we'll hear intricate vocal works from England, Italy, and Spain; a French Baroque setting of the myth of Ulysses; and a dark, dramatic lament, performed by candlelight. Most performances are held offsite at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, where listeners can experience this glorious music in a setting much like the cathedrals where Tallis, Byrd, Monteverdi, and others would have originally performed it.

The shipwrecked hero Ulysses is the inspiration for this encore performance by the Cleveland-based Les Délices, with special guest soprano Clara Rottsolk. Selections from Jean-Féry Rebel's little-known opera Ulysse provide the centerpiece, with a focus on a love triangle between the witch Circe, Ulysses, and his wife Penelope. Works by Thomas-Louis Bourgeois and Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre-a child prodigy, and the first French woman ever to compose an opera-allow Les Délices to showcase a range of styles, as well as their own far-reaching talents.

Les Délices' polished, expressive, and dynamic performances of masterpieces and little-known works from the French Baroque have garnered critical acclaim. Founded in Cleveland in 2006, Les Délices brings together artists with national reputations who share a passion for this exquisite yet seldom heard repertoire. Their performances on period instruments allow them to explore a rich tapestry of tone colors, and the group's name conveys their approach to the music of this era: a delight, a fine delicacy, sumptuous, and exciting. Les Délices' debut CD, The Tastes Reunited was named one of the "Top Ten Early Music Discoveries of 2009" (NPR's Harmonia), and their performances have been called "a beguiling experience" (Cleveland Plain Dealer) and "first class" (Early Music America Magazine). Les Délices has been featured on WCLV's Around Noon and WKSU's In Performance, NPR's syndicated Harmonia and Sunday Baroque, and their debut CD was featured as part of the audio-guide for a recent special exhibit at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art (Watteau, Music, and Theater). Les Délices made its New York debut before a sold-out audience at the Frick Collection in May 2010, and has performed for Music Before 1800 (New York), Early Music in Columbus, and at Miller Theatre at Columbia University in recent seasons. In addition to touring engagements, Les Délices presents its own annual three-concert series in Cleveland art galleries and at Plymouth Church, where the group is Artist in Residence. Les Délices released their second CD, Myths & Allegories, in November 2012. Visit www.lesdelices.org to learn more.
