Today, The FADER is releasing its annual ICON issue, dedicated to the life and work of singer-songwriter, composer and record producer, Trent Reznor.
On the tail of Reznor's first
Nine Inch Nails album release in five years, Hesitation Marks, and prior to the launch of the band's fall North American tour onSeptember 28, The FADER has compiled an encyclopedic issue of the NIN leader, retracing the path from his early years as a college freshman to the current music industry icon he is today. Within The FADER's 88th issue, on newsstands October 15th, we spoke with many of Reznor's friends and collaborators from over the years to document Reznor's life and works including Dir. David Lynch, Amanda Palmer, Lindsey Buckingham, and more.

"In my mind, I'm always looking to reinvent, not to ignore my catalog. I want to give people some taste of what they think they might get, but to also challenge them and push them into the next thing. But it's tough to judge as tastes shift and culture shifts. When we came out, we were the cool 'indie' band, if there was such a thing as indie at the time. Then, over time, things shift into, Hey you're in that category now. Confessional lyrics over aggressive music are out of fashion?you should have a beard and be playing f-king fake folk sh-t, whatever [the trend] might be. So I'm just trying to outlast everybody until being an old guy is in fashion." - Trent Reznor
The issue includes a centerpiece, in-depth interview with Reznor and writer Andrew "Noz" Nosnitsky, and what emerges is a look at an artist who crafts some of his era's rawest albums while maintaining a cool aura of inscrutability, a dogged musician with limitless stores of energy and an icon who has never stopped evolving.
Also included in the issue are a number of rare images of Reznor throughout his career, in addition to an interview with Director David Fincher of "The
Social Network", for which Reznor received an Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2010.

'Closer' is a menacing, genius song with a genius lyric, and I don't think it has anything to do with Trent's personal preferences. I think it had to do with communicating that idea. He's talking about anger and getting close to the flame. Trent's a serious voice. I mean that sonically and poetically, but it's way too dismissive to say he's the prince of darkness.
