At the end of last season on UGLY BETTY, we saw the character of Justin (Mark Indelicato), in the guise of Tony in a school production of WEST SIDE STORY, belting his lungs out (as the understudy), while his father was simultaneously killed in a convenience store. This was, without a doubt, the best "cliff-hanger" on television last spring.

UGLY BETTY is probably the freshest show on television and an unexpected hit for ABC, based on a Latin television show called LA FEA MAS BELLA (based on YO SOY BETTY, LA FEA), which happens to star Jaime Camil (THE MAMBO KINGS), who appeared in BroadwayWorld.com's Standing Ovations IV at Joe's Pub.

Somebody on the producing staff, or the directing pool, loves musicals and has made the most of stage actors Vanessa Williams, Michael Urie, Tony Plana, Patti LuPone, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Kristen Chenoweth.

We must give a "hats off" to Salma Hayek, who's idea it was to bring this to American television, for both its freshness and acknowledge all the awards which it has won to date. (Imagen Awards, Family Television Awards, Emmy Awards (11 nominations - September 16, 2007 Award Show), Golden Globe Awards, Writers Guild Awards, DGA Awards, Satellite Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, NAACP, Peabody Awards, ALMA Awards, TCA Awards, IMAGEN Awards).

We've tried desperately to get interviews with Michael Urie and Mark Indelicato...and oh, lucky day, we heard from them today and will have a piece about them on Friday for you.

With the Emmy Nominations for SCRUBS' musical episode, it seems that everyone's climbing onto the bandwagon for "musical" episodes...DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES...but we're putting our money on UGLY BETTY because we hear, through the grapevine (with help from a buried item in USA TODAY), that they have secured the talents of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (HAIRSPRAY, upcoming CATCH ME IF YOU CAN) and Jerry Mitchell (LEGALLY BLONDE, HAIRSPRAY, BROADWAY BARES)...and all we can say is -- "PLEEEEZE-- make this dream come true!"

As for ABC...get in touch with us and we'll be happy to confirm any and all details.
