For the third straight year, Single Carrot Theatre, along with the help of columnist Anna Ditkoff, has compiled and will present an entire year's worth of Murder Ink, a City Paper column that factually documents all murders that take place within Baltimore City limits.
Each week, Ditkoff details the murders committed, as made public by the Baltimore Police, and provides legal updates of previous murders as the information becomes available.
On January 15th at 7pm, Single Carrot will string together all 52 weeks of Ditkoff's column, and read, in order, the details and circumstances of every homicide that occurred in Baltimore in 2009.

"Baltimore's murder rate is almost seven times higher than New York City's, and yet New York's population is more than ten times Baltimore's," says Single Carrot Theatre's Director of Public Relations Brendan Ragan, "why aren't we outraged by this?

"If anything, Murder Ink at Single Carrot gives patrons an enlightening, if not frightening look at what it feels and sounds like to recount almost 230 homicides. It's heartbreaking. But ignoring it doesn't make it go away" concludes Ragan.

This year, Single Carrot has decided to take Murder Ink to the street. The theater will present the reading in front of their black box theater on North Avenue. They'll provide heat lamps and warm beverages for free. They'll encourage both patrons and passersby to listen to the tales of the Baltimoreans lost in 2009, even if for a moment.

In addition, instead of rehearsing a series of actors to read the columns, Single Carrot will invite patrons to rotate in as readers to pay their respects along with the Single Carrot ensemble and a few guest artists.

"The sad truth is, that after hearing 234 or 282 homicides read out loud, it becomes surreal. By reading a few of the names out, every individual taking part is both acknowledging that there is a problem and they'll be making a personal connection to those who died. Having readers come from the audience will make for a more communal experience" says Murder Ink director J. Buck Jabaily.

At the conclusion of the presentation, Single Carrot will invite patrons inside to have a discussion with the ensemble and columnist Anna Ditkoff.
