Rainbow Theatre Project to Stage Reading of LONG ISLAND SOUND, 3/17

The Rainbow Theatre Project is presenting the rarely-performed Noël Coward gem Long Island Sound as the fourth concert reading in their inaugural season. Directed by Delia Taylor, Long Island Sound plays at Source in D.C. on Monday, March 17, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., and will be preceded by a reading of Dr. Samantha M. McDermitt's short play, Epiphany III directed by Christopher Janson.

Full of Coward's signature wit and style, Long Island Sound was adapted from his short story "What Mad Pursuit?" and is based on the playwright's own experience at a house party in the Hamptons. The plot centers on an author whose weekend of peace and quiet at a friend's house is interrupted by a rather large party of boisterous artists and socialites, where he reluctantly becomes the main attraction.

Leading a cast of over 20 local and student artists, including Rick Hammerly, Mary Tucker, David Bryan Jackson and Christopher Janson, is Rainbow Theatre Project's first female director, Delia Taylor, who is Associate Producer of Theater J and there directed world premieres of There Are No Strangers and Sleeping Arrangements. She has also directed numerous student productions at The Theatre Lab where she teaches. As an actor, she has many local theatre credits, including Happy Days, Medea, Antony and Cleopatra, Night of the Iguana, and Metamorphosis and directing Twelfth Night and The Taming of the Shrew for WSC Avant Bard.

Taylor's excitement for the project is palpable: "How often does one get to have a cast of 22 in which each character contributes to the story? It is a luxury and I am grateful for the opportunity - also working with theatre colleagues of twenty years, alongside past and present acting students from teaching at The Theatre Lab, makes this experience unique. To be asked to participate in RTP's inaugural season is an honor for me having worked with Lee and Michael on other projects in the past and sharing with them an artistic commitment to the LGBT community."

Prior to the reading of Long Island Sound, is a scheduled reading of the 10-minute play Epiphany III, directed by Christopher Janson and featuring performances by Elizabeth Richards Bailey and John Kevin Boggs.

All of The Rainbow Theatre Project's inaugural season readings are free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served at Source, located at 1835 14th Street, NW in Washington, D.C.Source is located approximately two blocks from the U Street/Cardozo Metro Station. Street Parking is also available. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with events kicking off at 7:30 p.m. There will be one intermission during the reading of Long Island Sound.

The Rainbow Theatre Project is committed to being the premiere theatre for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in the Nation's Capital by presenting plays and musicals that reflect the unique experiences, interests and history of the LGBT community. Each of the inaugural season's readings consist of a play from the LGBT canon paired with a commissioned ten-minute play read before each classic work.
