Two of opera's greatest superstars-Plácido Domingo and Renée Fleming-will return to LA Opera in May, each starring in a major LA Opera premiere.

From May 17 through June 7, Plácido Domingo performs the role of Athanaël in the Company premiere of Jules Massenet's Thaïs,opposite soprano Nino Machaidze in the title role. Massenet specialist Patrick Fourniller conducts an opulent production directed by Nicola Raab. The most beautiful courtesan in Alexandria, Thaïs holds an entire city in her thrall. One man alone, the monk Athanaël, weeps for her sins, but his pilgrimage to save the sinner's soul becomes a tortured journey of erotic obsession.

On May 18, 21 and 24, soprano Renée Fleming performs the iconic role of Blanche DuBois in the Los Angeles premiere of André Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire, in performances conducted by Patrick Summers and directed by Brad Dalton. A highly charged adaptation of Tennessee Williams' classic play, the opera also stars bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as the hotheaded Stanley Kowalski, with soprano Stacey Tappan as Stella and tenor Anthony Dean Griffey as Blanche's guileless suitor Mitch.
