Patti LuPone Talks NIGHT MUSIC, UK Gypsy & Laurents

In a new feature out in Out.com today, consumate performer Patti LuPone opens up about everything from A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, UK Gypsy, Arthur Laurents, her misguided reputation as a diva and more, all revealed in her new book: Patti LuPone, A Memior, set for release in September.

On being mislabeled a diva, LuPone reveals: "It's never been about, ‘My wig is wrong, I'm not going on.' It's all been about what's in service of the show." Out.com reminds us that LuPone is notorious for such antics as "calling in sick during Les Mis over a contract dispute, throwing a lamp out a second story window during Sunset Boulevard."

On the disappointment about not opening Sunset Boulevard on Broadway (the role famously went to Glenn Close): "No one is born tough...Joe Mantegna says it's water off a duck's back. He's not from Sicily. I'm Sicilian. It's not water off a duck's back. It sits there and it festers. For years."

She additionally opened up about a more recent disappointment in the currently running production of A LITTE NIGHT MUSIC. As few people may know, LuPone had hoped to play Desiree but supposedly the star "called [director] Trevor Nunn...and he never called me back."

As for hopes that LuPone's GYPSY may be resurrected in London, the star is mostly mum, saying only that she and Arthur Laurents are not on the best of terms at the moment: "I did a TV pilot and Arthur got mad at me...He's a terrific man. I just want him to be happy."
