Entertainment Weekly writes that Nickelodeon announced during its upfront presentation its plans to develop a SpongeBob SquarePants musical for Broadway.

The event included a performance of the show's opening number, "Bikini Bottom Day" (pictured, left).

Tina Landau, who is currently helming BIG LOVE off-Broadway at the Signature Theatre, will direct the show, which is set to feature music from Aerosmith, Lady Antebellum, Sara Bareilles, John Legend and T.I., among others.

The Emmy, Kids' Choice and BAFTA-winning animated series SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS was created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg and centers on SpongeBob and his friends in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Tom Kenny provides the voice of SpongeBob and many of the other roles on the show.

The series launched in 1999 and has since spawned two movies -- THE SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE (2004) and THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER (2015).

The series' music editor and main composer is Nicolas Carr. No word yet on whether he is part of the musical's creative team.
