The New York Times has reported that the New York International Fringe Festival, a yearly theatre festival that has given life to nearly four thousand plays, musicals, dance works, comedy acts and operas, will not be returning for 2017.

In a move that will come as a shock to many theatre makers and fans, the festival has announced that it will be taking 2017 off to re-consider and re-vamp the structure of the festival as well as to figure out how to better accommodate artists and audiences alike.

Citing that the window between festivals is too short a time to implement any real change, the minds behind Fringe have decided to forego 2017's festival. FringeNYC's Producing Director, Elena K. Holy, told the Times: "It's too short a window to make any significant changes. We need to disrupt it."

There has been no allusion as to how extensive the changes will be, but the artistic team behind the Fringe assures artists and fans that the hiatus is in no way a harbinger of trouble within the organization.
