The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy presents the Jewish Upper West Side South walking tour, led by urban historian Marty Shore on Sunday, October 26 at 10:45 AM.

The Upper West Side offers a wealth of cultural history and a variety of architectural styles, including beaux arts, art nouveau and art deco. Bordered by Central Park and Riverside Park, the 2.5 square mile neighborhood has some of the most outstanding 19th row houses in New York City. During the 1930's, a significant number of Jewish refugees escaping Europe moved to the area, joining an already diverse community. The Upper West Side is now home to a cross section of Jewish culture, with dozens of synagogues, Jewish-style restaurants and educational institutions.

On this walking tour, the Conservancy takes a look at the southern portion of the neighborhood, beginning at West 68th Street and touring all the way north to West 81st Street, ending at Zabar's. Along the way, tour guide Marty Shore discusses secular and Jewish history, theaters, apartment houses and the famous and infamous residents that have called this community home. The tour includes stops at The Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, Shearith Israel and The Westside Institutional Synagogue.

The walking tour meets at Central Park West and West 68th Street at 10:45 AM. Tickets are$20 adults and $18 seniors and students and available at www.nycjewishtour.org or by calling 212-374-4100. Tickets are $2 additional if purchased on the day of tour.

The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving, sharing and celebrating the Jewish heritage of the Lower East Side. The Conservancy aims to raise public awareness of the Lower East Side's distinct cultural identity through innovative public walking tours and other programs, while supporting the neighborhood's community of living synagogues and other historic structures. Private customized tours are available by appointment. For more information about the LESJC, call 212-374-4100 or visit www.nycjewishtours.org or www.facebook.com/nycjewishtours.
