"Outside the Wire," a social impact theater and media company, will present dramatic readings of Sophocles' Ajax and Philoctetes at Teachers College, Columbia University on July 27, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The performance of "Theater of War" will be followed by a panel and audience discussion about the physical and psychological challenges faced by service members, veterans, their families, caregivers and communities.

Hosted by the Teachers College Resilience Center for Veterans and Families, which pairs groundbreaking research on human emotional resilience with clinical training of therapists to assist veterans and their families as they transition back to civilian life, the performance will be part of a two-day certificate program to provide participants with Veteran multicultural competence training so they can offer more effective, multicultural-informed services to Veterans and their families. The certificate program is part of Teachers College's Continuing Professional Studies program.

Theater of War, a production of the Outside the Wire theater and media company, uses Sophocles' plays to forge a common vocabulary for openly discussing the visible and invisible wounds of war suffered by individuals, families and communities. Outside the Wire employs theater and other media to address pressing public health and social issues and foster understanding and compassion.

Theater of War attempts to mobilize citizens and resources to help improve the lives of service members, veterans, their families, and people in their communities. There have been over350 performances of Theater of War for military and civilian communities throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. The readings will be followed by a discussion with panelists and a facilitated, town-hall style audience discussion.
