Called the "most vital authors' series in the city," by Time Out NY, and known for its consistently good taste, Happy Ending has launched careers and proudly, ended none. $15

TWANG TWANG SHOCK A BOOM

Wednesday, April 7 at 9:30 PM

"...lightning in a bottle... a short-lived musical miracle." - -The Austin Chronicle

Texas has a way of giving birth to legendary, short-lived bands whose music lasts forever. Twang Twang Shock-A-Boom, existed as a band for only a year, from 1989 to 1990. The ebullient acoustic trio of Davíd Garza, Jeff Haley, and Chris Searles cranked out quirky, organically hilarious and heartfelt tunes with the bare-bones setup of guitar, upright bass, and a guitar case standing in for drums. In the brief year of their existence, they went from playing open air gigs on the West Mall of The University of Texas campus, to sold out shows at Austin's renowned Cactus Cafe, to a celebrated audition for CBS Records in New York. Soon after the audition, Twang Twang's David Garza began a successful solo career, and the band receded to the stuff of legend, their self-produced cassettes and bootlegged shows traded amongst fans--and later on the internet--like musical gold. The Austin Chronicle declares Twang Twang "one of the most breathtaking musical projects Austin has ever seen."

And now they're back, old friends playing in support of their re-released, re-mastered CD, Me So Twangy. After a series of sold out reunion shows in Austin, Twang Twang finally completes their journey to New York with a very special show at Joe's Pub. Outstanding musicians in their own right-having toured individually with the likes of Fiona Apple, The Flatlanders, and Shawn Colvin--Twang Twang Shock-a-Boom reunites for this one-time show at Joe's Pub.

KENNY WHITE

Thursday, April 8 at 7:00 PM

Fans of piano-based singer-songwriters in the tradition of Randy Newman and Joe Jackson will find themselves right at home with White, whose new collection of songs, Never Like This, will come out this summer on Judy Collins' record label, Wildflower Records. Never Like This is a thematic departure for Kenny as he takes his first step towards the political song. "As I listen to radio, watch the Grammy awards, and buy my share of music, I find the lack of political outspokenness to be staggering. Music has always had its share of entertainers. But it also had its share of provocateurs. Those who felt an obligation to, if not enlighten, at least encourage participation. And there are so amazingly few that are willing to climb onto that soapbox, I felt the need to try. and so, this EP." $15

JEFFREY GAINES

Thursday, April 8 at 9:30 PM

Since Jeffrey Gaines' self-titled debut was released, this expressive and dynamic singer, guitarist, and songwriter has been heralded for his soul-searching confessional lyrics and his powerful live performances. To quote Rolling Stone, "Jeffrey Gaines is an ethereal soul....insistent, impassioned, full of self-knowledge. He is the voice of a new generation." $20 in advance, $22 at the door

MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO

Thursday, April 8 - Saturday, April 10 at Midnight
"In the search for love, truth and justice a good vamp never hurts. That's the modus operandi of Meshell Ndegeocello." - Jon Pareles, The New York Times

The Best of Bitter & More (4/8 & 4/9) & a Night of Gil Scott-Heron covers (4/10)

Canonized, marginalized or just scrutinized, Meshell Ndegeocello has given up with the politics of explaining herself. After 20 years in an industry that has called her everything from avant garde to a dying breed, what unquestionably remains is the fearsome bassist, prolific songwriter and the creativity and curiosity of an authentic musical force. With that, she has earned critical acclaim, the unfailing respect of fellow players, songwriters and composers, and the dedication of her diverse, unclassifiable fans. For the sake of setting the record straight, a few brass tacks remain: Meshell was born in Germany, raised in DC, signed at 23, and has been nominated for 10 Grammy awards.

Meshell returns to Joe's for what promises to be 3 unforgettable nights of music with The Best of Bitter & More on April 8th & 9th, and a night of Gil Scott-Heron covers on April 10th, 2010. $25

JANELLE MONÁE

Friday & Saturday, April 9 & 10 at 7:00 PM

A ground-breaking, genre-blurring singer, songwriter, producer, and performer, Janelle Monáe's inventive style melds a refined pop sensibility with an extraordinary postmodern mash-up of soul, funk, and rock ‘n' roll. The Grammy nominated singer will be releasing her widely anticipated full length debut album "The ArchAndroid" on May 18th. "The ArchAndroid" follows Monáe's two acclaimed EPs, 2008's "Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition)" and "Metropolis: Suite I OF IV," both of which received extensive critical praise upon their initial releases. Two songs from the upcoming album entitled "Tightrope" (featuring Big Boi) and "Cold War" are now available for purchase exclusively via www.janellemonae.com. In support of the upcoming release Monáe, who has developed a reputation for her incredibly dynamic live shows, will be doing a series of exclusive residencies in a number of cities across North America and join this summer's much anticipated 2010 Lilith Tour for select dates. For full details and the latest news visit www.janellemonae.com. $15
