Florida Grand Opera recently held auditions for the Youth Chorus for the upcoming production of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca. Twelve children, ranging in age from 7-17, were selected for the chorus from a total group of twenty children that auditioned.

Chorus members are traveling from as far as Fort Myers to perform in this coveted production. With most of the Youth Chorus members studying music theory as well as being enrolled in private voice and piano lessons, these children take their work very seriously. After the third music rehearsal for Tosca, the members of the Youth Chorus have already fully memorized their songs. "This is a very smart group of young singers and they sound fantastic," commented Michael Sakir, Chorus Master for Florida Grand Opera.

Sakir provides exceptional choral music and theatrical performance instruction to the Youth Chorus. His instruction fosters their creativity and personal expression instilling artistic excellence in a professional environment.

Opening at the Arsht Center on March 29, 2014, with an exciting double cast and timeless sets by Ercole Sormani, Tosca is a riveting psychological drama that builds up to one of opera's most stunning conclusions.

Based on a play by Victorien Sardou, Puccini's lyrical masterwork tells the story of Floria Tosca, a famous diva, who fights to save her lover in a gripping tale of political turmoil and human passion with a devastating end. Puccini's inventive orchestration, through-composition, and use of leitmotifs, such as the highly recognizable "Scarpia chord," made it an immediate hit with the public and one of the most frequently performed operas in the world to this day.

FGO's Box Office is located at the Doral Center on 8390 NW 25 St., Doral, FL 33122, and is open to the public from 10am to 4pm, Monday through Friday during the season. Tickets may also be purchased by phone at (800) 741-1010 or online at www.FGO.org.
