Variety reports Leonardo DiCaprio (Blood Diamond, The Aviator, The Departed) may star in a Warner Bros. movie adaptation of Farragut North, based on the political drama stage-play written by Beau Willimon. George Clooney (Ocean's 13) is rumored to direct.

DiCaprio's Appian Way will produce with Clooney and Grant Heslov's Smoke House. Playwright Willimon is writing the screenplay.

Farragut North focuses on "a young, idealistic communications director who works for an inspiring, though unorthodox, presidential candidate. During the campaign, his career is done-in by more seasoned politicos who thrive on poisonous partisan politics, dirty tricks and back-stabbing."

Titled after the Washington, D.C. Metro station that is located near many lobbyists' offices, the play is loosely based on democrat Howard Dean's 2004 presidential election campaign (during which playwright Willimon worked for Dean).

In July, The New York Post initially reported the play, directed by Mike Nichols, will hit Broadway next year, with Jake Gyllenhaal starring in his Broadway debut.  Jeffrey Richards (Spring Awakening) would produce.
