Samuel Goldwyn Films announced today they have acquired North American rights to writer / director / composer Sasha Gordon's IT HAD TO BE YOU, starring Cristin Milioti (Broadway's ONCE, off-Broadway's LAZARUS, FX's "Fargo," Wolf of Wall Street, CBS's "How I Met Your Mother") and Dan Soder (MTV's "Guy Code," Comedy Central's "Inside Amy Schumer"). The subversive romantic comedy, which has won numerous awards on the festival circuit following its world premiere at the Austin Film Festival, is slated for an October 21 release.

The film follows Sonia (Milioti) a quirky, neurotic jingle writer who has always dreamt of a big and exciting life. Surprised by a sudden proposal and subsequent ultimatum from her easy-going boyfriend, Chris, Sonia has three days to decide whether she'll join the ranks of her married friends or take a leap and pursue her fantasies.

Blinded by anxiety, and pulled towards a fantastical idea of BECOMING the kind of woman she always idealized in films and literature, Sonia decides she isn't ready to get married. Instead she will go on a solo trip to ROME and finally shed her inhibitions. However, reality quickly catches up to her as her journey proves a lot bumpier than the idyllic Eat Pray Love she'd envisioned.

A whimsical romantic comedy that's raunchy and yet gentle, It Had To Be You explores the choices women face today while satirizing cultural expectations of gender and romance.

"We were drawn to Sasha's fresh take on the romantic comedy," said Melanie Miller, Executive Vice President at Samuel Goldwyn Films. "Festival goers have embraced the film and we can't wait to bring it to a wider audience."

"Samuel Goldwyn has released some of my favorite indies so working with them on my debut feature is truly a dream come true," said Gordon.

It Had to Be You is produced by Rachel Brenna (Central Park), Richard Arlook (I Smile Back, THE JOURNEY is the Destination), Benjamin Kruger ("Lonelygirl15") and Levi Abrino (Amazon's "Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street"); Executive Producer is Chris Columbus (Tallulah, Mediterranea, the Harry Potter franchise). The deal was negotiated by Melanie Miller and Jill Karole of Samuel Goldwyn Films and William Lowery of APA and Michelle Welch and Sam Eigen of Shoreline on behalf of the filmmakers.
