Brooklyn's Brave New World Repertory Theatre Presents MOBY DICK-REHEARSED,5/3-5/12

Brooklyn's acclaimed Brave New World Repertory Theatre kicks off its 2013 season with a site specific production of Moby Dick -- Rehearsed, Orson Welles' adaptation of the classic Melville novel.

Over two weekends (May 3rd-5th and May 10th-12th), Brave New World (BNW) takes Moby Dick-Rehearsed to sea, staging this highly physical ensemble piece at the Waterfront Museum docked in Red Hook. Creating Melville's world on the bare stage of the historic barge, the cast repurposes the museum's nautical artifacts to transform the barge into the docks of Nantucket, the deck of Captain Ahab's ship, and the wild unpredictable ocean. Welles' adaptation strips Melville's sprawling masterpiece to its bones, turning it into a play within a play: In the afternoon before an evening performance of King Lear, a Shakespearean theatre company delves into the text of Moby Dick. "Encapsulating the passion and drama of the original work, Welles' Moby Dick-Rehearsed allows us to step away from a realism-based approach and gain some perspective," says Shannon Sindelar, BNW's new producing artistic director. "Our two directors have brought some dynamic physical work to the production including actor-generated sound effects creating the wind and chaos of the elements in a heightened setting where the audience can see all the moving parts. The actors also play instruments and are creating sea shanties for the show."
