An exhibition of watercolors and oil paintings by Lawrence (Larry) Campbell will open for 3 weeks today, July 9th, 2013 with a gallery reception on July 11th from 6-8pm.

This is a tribute to a well-known art critic, painter and instructor who was born in Paris, France, 1914, to American parents. His academic training included studies at Academie de La Grande Chaumiere, the Art Students League of NY ( with Will Barnet, Vaclav Vytlacil and Morris Kantor), the London Central School of Arts and Crafts, Columbia University and apprenticeships in Munich and Glasgow.

He was Associate Editor at Art News from 1949-1976 and regular contributor to Art in America through the 1980's and became one of the most highly respected art critics of contemporary art in the country. He was also a member of the International Association of Art Critics and the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors.

Many of his watercolors in this exhibition were inspired by summers in Vermont, The Cape and the South of France. Some of his scenic oils were inspired views of Prospect and Riverside Park.

He had his first exhibition in New York at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in 1951 and subsequently exhibited at the Tanager Gallery, the Kornblee Gallery and the Green Mountain Gallery. He now returns to Blue Mountain posthumously for a visit with friends and colleagues. His daughter Sarahjeane will be present at the artist's reception to greet you.
