Activist Avi Hoffman To Create Programming For Holocaust Awareness

Internationally renowned actor and Jewish culture activist Avi Hoffman, who was recently inducted into the Bronx Jewish Hall of Fame, is thrilled to announce 2017 programming that will focus on education, entertainment, tolerance, and Holocaust awareness, in association with the University of Miami Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies and the George Feldenkreis Program in Judaic Studies. The eclectic program includes a myriad of events and panels, which aim to heal the world through education and the arts. The programming will begin in South Florida and culminate in New York City.

Hoffman, who has been featured in a handful of television shows such as "Bloodline," "Magic City," and "Law & Order," is mostly recognized for his award-winning shows that aim to keep the Yiddish language and Jewish culture alive.

Founded by Hoffman along with his mother, retired Columbia University Professor, journalist and playwright Miriam Hoffman, the Mendl Hoffman Foundation's mission is to celebrate the positive, far reaching impact of Yiddish and Jewish language & culture on the world. He is also the President & Executive Director of the Arnold Unger Foundation for Remembrance Dachau Album: An Interfaith Holocaust Project and Producing Artistic Director of theJoseph Papp Yiddish Theatre.

"I am so ecstatic about the programming slated for the remaining of 2017," said Hoffman. "I hope to obtain the ultimate goal I have set for this program and reach a wide group of individuals through education and the arts."

Following is the program and information on each event:

Friday, March 10 - Sunday, March 12, 2017 - A Jew Grows in Brooklyn 2.0 - As part of Yiddishkayt Initiative Entertainment Series, Door to Door Generations, Inc in association with the Joseph Papp Yiddish Theatre present Jake Ehrenreich's hit Broadway show, A Jew Grows in Brooklyn 2.0.. The journey of this child of Holocaust survivors from Brooklyn to Broadway to the Yiddish Catskill Mountains is hilarious and tragic. Jake is now globally recognized as an academic expert on the Catskills, Comedy, and The Holocaust. In 2016 he was inducted into the Brooklyn Jewish Hall of Fame and was awarded the civilian Certificate of Special Recognition from the United States Congress "in recognition of outstanding and invaluable service to the community."

Monday, March 20, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. - Reflections of a Lost Poet - The Life and Works of Itzik Manger - As part of Yiddishkayt Initiative Entertainment Series, Professor Miriam Hoffman and her son Avi Hoffman will be presenting the songs and poems of the beloved Yiddish poet who lived through the best and worst of times.

Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. - Address Unknown - As part of Yiddishkayt Initiative Entertainment Series, hosted by NEXT GENERATIONS, Avi Hoffman will be performing in a reading of Address Unknown, the story of a friendship between a San Francisco-based Jewish art dealer and his former business partner, who has returned to Germany as the Nazi Party comes to power. As these dear friends become ideological enemies, one commits a cowardly betrayal while the other plots an ingenious - and deadly - revenge. The play demonstrates how the seeds of prejudice take root in an atmosphere of hatred.

Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. - The Dachau Album: An Interfaith Holocaust Project - Made possible by Arnold Unger Foundation for Remembrance, Inc., the Child Survivors/Hidden Children of the Holocaust will be hosting a presentation of The Dachau Album, an interfaith holocaust project interconnecting the worlds of Christianity and Judaism, art and reality, life and death, love, desperation, and the ultimate triumph of hope and the human Spirit. The subject of the post-presentation discussion is #NeverAgainIsNow.

Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 7:00p.m. - A Happy End! - As part of Yiddishkayt Initiative Entertainment Series, Avi Hoffman will star in a reading of "A Happy End," a popular play written by Iddo Netenyahu about the story of a family in Berlin during the Holocaust.

Sunday, April 23, 2017 - The Dachau Album: An Interfaith Holocaust Project - The newly built Sheen Center in New York City will be hosting a large-scale presentation of The Dachau Album: An Interfaith Holocaust Project. The evening will include a pre-presentation VIP reception for those who want to experience the original Album and supplemental artifacts in-person, followed by a multi-media presentation. The VIP reception will also be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Rabbi Mark Golub (Founder of Jewish Broadcasting Service - JBS) and featuring Rev. Brian E. McWeeney (Director of the Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs at Archdiocese of New York), Steve Ludsin, who served as a charter member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, a presidential appointment, and member of the original President's Commission on the Holocaust and Dr. Yael Danieli internationally renowned expert victimologist and traumatologist and Advisor on Victims of Terrorism for the office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. May 3 - 21, 2017 - World Premiere of Broken Snow - As part of Yiddishkayt Initiative Entertainment Series, an unforgettable tale of two strangers who are brought together by a mystery that will make them question everything about who they are and their father's shocking history. The play, written by Ben Andron and directed by Michael Andron, features Avi Hoffman and South Florida favorite Nicholas Richberg as they star in this World Premiere in Miami, Florida.

ABOUT Avi Hoffman

Avi Hoffman was recently inducted into the Bronx Jewish Hall of Fame, was nominated for a NY Drama Desk Award for his Yiddish language portrayal of Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman and was invited to the Vatican to meet Pope Francis. He is known for his award-winning PBS one man shows Too Jewish, Too Jewish, Too! and Still Jewish After All These Years (Performer of the Year '95 - NY Press Magazine; L.A. OVATION award - Best Actor In a Musical 2001; NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award nominations). On TV, he was featured as Sid Raskin in the Starz TV series Magic City, as well as on Netflix' Bloodline, A&E's The Glades and on the NBC series Law and Order. He starred in the motion picture - The Imported Bridegroom and was seen in the PBS documentary They Came For Good: A History of the Jews in the US. Avi has performed all over the world, has numerous acting and directing credits and has received multiple awards and nominations.
