The Thornbirds - the musical#1
Posted: 4/21/09 at 6:26pm
I just got back from seeing the world premiere production of The Thornbirds, the musical. It was beyond dire. It is hard to believe that someone actually sat down and wrote the mawkish dialogue and what are the most ham-fisted lyrics I've ever heard - and harder still to believe that this ever got to the stage. At one point mid-way through Act One I lost the will to live. LOL
Examples of the lyrics are:
"This can't be true-oo
I never knew-oo"
and:
"In cardinal red or papal white
You'd look right".

I kid you not.

Ah, it reminds me of the heady days of Bernadette, the musical:

"The thought I'd played a game
That I could not win.
You think I've reached the end...
Now watch me begin..."

The sublime opening production number by the soon-to-be saint!

"I picture 'The Far Pavillions' -that sort of crap!"

Don't insult the Far Pavilions by comparing it to this! FP was a sophisticated masterpiece in comparison.lol This seems like Colleen McCullough deciding - let's go write a musical, without having the slightest clue how to do so and bringing a composer who also had no clue how to do so to help her write it. There is one song where Helen Anker sings "Why?!" - just what I was thinking!

But it is worth seeing - I laughed until I ached at times and tears were literally running down my cheeks. There is a scene, which is meant to be deathly serious, when a tree falls on Meggie's father and kills him - and everyone laughed out loud.

I aim to please...

But it's a sad reflection when it reaches the point that people are more likely to enjoy reading a scathing review than they will enjoy the actual show. lol

I never thought this show stood a chance, and i guess i was right. Some things are just best left alone.

Edit:
Oh My god I've just (tried) listening to this. The overture sounds like some alien planet trying to communicate with earth.
Sounds as painful as a backside full of thorns!
Hid e ous!

I didn't like the TV series.

Maybe there'll be a musical version of Lace next.

Roots the musical might have been great with some of the original cast of the series reprising their roles. The fabulous Leslie Uggams and Ben Vereen! (And there were also other musical stars in the cast - Yvonne de Carlo, Ian McShane and Burl Ives!)

Second thoughts, no - Roots would be a terrible musical. Almost as terrible as - The Thornbirds!

How about the rock opera of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and a jolly House of Elliott re-do?

I like the bouncy font! It looks like you should expect a bubbly comedy similar to Hairspray. Sounds like you would laugh almost as much.

That is a masterpiece- and I love the erect drill thingy!

I've just realized, poor old Helen Anker- she doesn't half get lumbered with some stinkers!
