Three New Theatres For London

London is to get 3 new performing spaces for Off-West End productions. The new auditoriums are to be installed in the chambers of County Hall on the South Bank The chamber room will be the main space with an our door area opening in the summer months. A small space room will open at a later date. Plans have just been approved by Lambeth so these will open as soon as possible.

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

1. More new theatres = yay!
2. More new 200-500 seaters = double yay!
3. Perpetuation of the ill-defined "off west end" = boo (seriously, the Soho and Bush are "off west end" but the Chocolate Factory and New Wimbledon are "fringe" ?)
4. County Hall = expect west end prices and rentals. Nothing there is ever cheap.

You know it may be worth you checking out what they intend to charge for that small space when it opens. Hell, 'Dog Sees God' could be its opening production!

'Off-Broadway' seems to work as a name in New York but for London, i prefer the old name of 'Fringe'.

I agree

we will now just refer to its Fringe

anyone who refers to it as Off West End etc will be hunted down and killed with the Grease Cast Recording

Let's hope it is well-staffed though. I have too many horrible memories of "civic" theatres!
