British Musicals - Put A Stamp On It!

The Royal Mail has launched a brand new set of stamps, featuring classic musicals that have appeared on Londonís West End.

The stamp launch celebrates current shows 'Blood Brothers', 'We Will Rock You', 'Billy Elliot' and the weird and wild 'The Rocky Horror Show', plus old classics 'Oliver!', 'Me And My Girl', 'Return To The Forbidden Panet' and 'Monty Python's-Spamalot'.

What an odd selection! No Les Mis, no Phantom, not to mention any number of long-running American classics such as Chicago and Grease(!). Return to the Forbidden Planet? Spamalot???

Very odd.

I suppose that they are all representative of 'Britishness', though the only reason I can think that Forbidden Planet is on there is due to the Shakespeare link...

"Murder is a very British thing, isn't it? I mean, it's almost like a hobby over there."
"Why do you insist you must hear the words? When you know I cannot give you words. Not the ones you need..."

Yes, they had to be British musicals - So Les Mis is, obviously, French.

I am surprised at the lack of Andrew Lloyd-Webber, though...

Would have thought Phantom and Evita definitely...and much as I hate it, CATS would make a great stamp!

I'm sure they'll produce another set of stamps should this set be successful, Spamalot isn't really British as it started on Broadway.

SPAMALOT: British librettist/lyricist; British composer; based on British movie by British comedy team; set in medieval England (or maybe Finland lol)......

Seems pretty British to me!

Jonwo, by your logic - Sister Act is a British show not American because it was staged in London before New York?
Q.E.D. lol

Not to give to many stamps to the Lord but surely 'Evita' or 'Superstar' should be there!

OK, let's have our own little thing...

What 8 musicals would you choose to have stamps made of them?

I'd probably choose:

1. The Phantom of the Opera
2. Blood Brothers
3. Cats
4. Oliver!
5. Mamma Mia
6. We Will Rock You
7. Billy Elliot
8. Jesus Christ Superstar

Don't agree with 'Mama Mia' its a juke box show & its Swedish!
'We will Rock' is another juke box show of a pop group!

Sure, Mamma Mia uses ABBA music but I still think as a musical and as a production - it's British.

Also, We Will Rock You doesn't lose any merit for me for being a jukebox show - it's still a great show!

Sister Act first premiered in California.

I guess one could look at it either way--whether if it was staged in Britain first or the setting/creative team.

I could see it either way.

My whole point was that it's irrelevant WHERE a show was first performed. What determines a show's "nationality" is the writers IMO not who put money into into stage it.

They should have a stamp for 'Love Never Dies' just to wind Bob up.

I thought they would have 'The Mousetrap', for heaven sake it's been playing 60 years now.

I went in to buy a few today and spent £10!
I think the choices are a bit odd too but love the Rocky Horror one, just wish it had been 1st class (rather than 97p, international letter rate I think) and I'd have stocked up on them.

I did buy 14 1st class and 3 97p stamps!
I like buying the picture ones anyway but don't send that many international letters!
The stamp set is £5.52 or £6.05 for the presentation pack.
