A glimpse into the private life of George Bernard Shaw! At the turn of the 20th century, G. B. Shaw was establishing his place among the world's greatest playwrights. One of the actresses in the London theatre at the time was a woman whose career woud last for decades and would intersect with Shaw's in a way that would change them both. The chastely married GBS became infatuated with her, an infatuation she did little to discourage. As he by turns desired her and was frustrated by her, they kept up a correspondence worthy of two great wits, and Shaw wrote one of his best roles for her Eliza Doolittle. In the 1950s, actor Jerome Kilty adapted their letters, and their extraordinary up-and-down friendship, into the play Dear Liar, a huge hit in London and New York. Mrs. Pat is not well-remembered now, so it gives us great pleasure to reintroduce her to our audience and to give you a glimpse of an infatuated Shaw.

Washington Stage Guild Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

Washington Stage Guild is at 4018 Argyle Terrace, NW, WASHINGTON.

Founded in 1986 by a professional company of theatre artists dedicated to producing literate, challenging works in a collegial and supportive atmosphere, the Washington Stage Guild quickly established itself as an indispensable component of the D.C. area theatre scene; recognized as early as the end of the first season (1987) by The Washington Post. Having since attracted international attention for its distinctive plays and strong ensemble, the company was praised in 2010 in The Washington Post: "...the Stage Guild staged more than 80 productions in five different homes, a remarkable track record for a company that has never had its own theatre. And it earned intense devotion…" The ensemble theatre company’s acclaimed repertoire of neglected classics, unfamiliar works by familiar playwrights, and stimulating new plays from around the world is presented in a style that is the Guild’s own—direct and clear, with a strong commitment to adhering to the author’s intent.
