East Van Opera is back with their second original score for the exciting presentation of their newest opera, Beautys Beast. Join them at the Annex Performing Arts Theatre for an evening of luscious harmonies and hauntingly beautiful melodies as their talented cast present this new music by local composer Allison Cociani. The libretto penned by Anna Shill is an expression of compassion and selflessness, as it dives into issues facing consent, Stockholm syndrome, female empowerment, and critical self discovery. This perspective is particularly clear in the opera's own story. In Beauty's Beast, compassion and selflessness are recurrent themes (as they are throughout the Beauty and the Beast canon), but the female protagonist is also an advocate for critical self-discovery. The opera focuses on Belle's journey to self-knowledge, and to how she builds a healthier relationship with the Beast based on mutual understanding, communication and consent - a particularly timely portrayal, given the concerns and awareness being fostered by the #MeToo movement.Their modern take on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast will be sure to inspire and entertain. With Julie McIsaac at the helm as their director, and Perri Lo leading them as their collaborative pianist, their all female creative team ensures that Beautys Beast is a project that is consistent with their goal of delivering artistic experiences curated by women. Cociani sees this timeliness as essential to making opera relevant to the community of Vancouver, and to bringing a new awareness to this often-traditional art form. "I think that people will find this opera is very relatable - particularly since it combines new music with a story that everyone knows," she says. "By blending an innovative form and a current perspective with an iconic, incredibly beloved fairy tale, we're creating a show that isn't just for longtime opera lovers or classical music aficionados - it's truly for everyone."Dont miss the chance to witness music being made in your community in its most independent and innovative form. The indie opera movement is growing quickly in British Columbia, and East Van Opera is so happy to be a part of this amazing community and have the chance to share our vision with you!https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/beautys-beast-tickets-66946987241Music - Allison CocianiLibretto - Anna ShillDirector - Julie McIssacCollaborative Pianist - Perri LoBelle - Anna ShillBeast - Jason CookEnchantress - Allison CocianiBeautys Beast July 6th, 7th 7:30 pmJuly 7th 2:30 pmANNEX - 823 Seymour Street Vancouver BCGeneral Admission - $35Seniors and Students - $30
