The Pillow Dream

What if you could live an entire lifetime in a single dream?

A young scholar rests his head on a magical pillow. In the brief time it takes for a pot of millet to cook, he dreams a whole life — ambition fulfilled, status achieved, love found and lost, fortune gained and overturned. Then he wakes. The millet is still cooking.

Inspired by Tang Xianzu’s seventeenth-century masterpiece The Handan Dream, The Pillow Dream reimagines this celebrated Chinese tale through the language of contemporary Kunqu theatre. Behind its centuries-old story lies a strikingly modern question: if success, status and identity can disappear as quickly as a dream, what are we really chasing?

Rooted in the refined aesthetics of Kunqu Opera, the production brings together stylised movement, poetic imagery and symbolic performance with a bold minimalist stage. A pillow, a handkerchief, a doorway or a beam of light continually shifts in meaning, while performers transform between characters and identities, dissolving the boundaries between dream and reality.

Ancient theatrical traditions meet contemporary questions of ambition, identity and the roles we perform in society. The result is neither conventional Chinese opera nor conventional spoken theatre, but a fluid theatrical world suspended between past and present, East and West, reality and illusion.

The Pillow Dream treats tradition not as a museum object, but as a living language — inviting today’s audiences to enter an ancient dream and perhaps recognise something of their own lives within it.
