IT'S MY BIRTHDAY Will Come to The Source Theatre Stratford
Julian Nichols choreographs the company's first full-length contemporary dance-theatre production
Bodies in Action will present IT'S MY BIRTHDAY, a contemporary dance-theatre work, at The Source Theatre Stratford, London on Saturday 23 May 2026.
Exploring self-worth, visibility, and otherness, IT'S MY BIRTHDAY examines how birthdays, moments designed to celebrate an individual, can become emotionally complex spaces where joy, anxiety, shame, pride, and grief coexist.
Created by Artistic Director and Choreographer Julian Nichols, the work is shaped by a commitment to responsive movement that prioritises listening and authentic physical expression. It unfolds through a series of physical and textual states that shift between playfulness and unease.
Bringing together a multidisciplinary team, the piece draws on contemporary dance, physical theatre and theatrical illusion, creating a space where individual authenticity is reclaimed through collective action. IT'S MY BIRTHDAY invites audiences to reflect on what it means to belong and be seen in a world that rewards conformity.
Bodies in Action was founded in 2021 by Canadian Italian choreographer and dancer Julian Nichols. Based in London, the company is dedicated to representing all identities equally within contemporary dance. IT'S MY BIRTHDAY marks the company's first full-length production.
Julian's practice centres on the human experience and identity, using movement as a tool for community connection and social change for the queer community. His choreographic work is characterised by the use of movement and language, often blending physically rigorous dance with text and theatrical illusion. He has previously created works for Rambert School and London Studio Centre among others.
