Theatre Tulsa Opens 96th Season With Oklahoma Premiere Of NEWSIES
By: Julie Musbach
Theatre Tulsa will kick off its 96th season in August with Oklahoma's first locally-produced version of "Newsies."
Performance rights for "Newsies" became available in March of this year, and Theatre Tulsa was one of the first theatre companies in the county to book it for its upcoming season. "Newsies" is a musical based on the 1992 Disney film, which was inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. The show features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein. "Newsies" made its Broadway debut in 2012, where it played for more than 1,000 performances. After closing on Broadway, the show toured throughout North America until 2016. In its first year on Broadway, "Newsies" won Tony Awards for Best Choreography and Best Original Score, as well as Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Music. "Theatre Tulsa audiences have come to expect big shows from us, and this is one of the biggest in the country today. This is a massive, dance-heavy show that will leave audiences astonished at the high level of local talent we have on stage," said Jarrod Kopp, Executive Director of Theatre Tulsa.
